<p>IT’S BEEN A TOUGH YEAR FOR KIDS. War, terrorism and political discord have dominated the international and national news, while close to home a rising tide of gang violence and automobile accidents has taken far too many young lives. But when we culled the work of two dozen photographers to create a scrapbook of the lives of Washington’s children, our eyes were primarily drawn to the irrepressible energy the photographs captured, the whirlwind of activity, aspiration and achievement. Yes, we chose a few somber moments that speak to the fact that the world can be a scary place, but we can count ourselves immensely lucky that the exquisite ambivalence of appearing in silly hats in a school play, the intense focus of a young athlete at work, the transcendent release of dancing a devotion and the soul-deep desire for handout candy all burn as brightly as ever. Just look at these faces.</p>
