All UVa frats on suspension

No matter what happens, people are going to sue. Schools are going to lose sometimes.

People sue.

Momofthreeboys, Your link was good. I hope the decision makers take the advice. Maybe the schools will lose less often.

Right. We are primarily talking about rape on this thread. There is a new report of rape at an off campus Duke fraternity house.

an update:

While we are talking about insurance, rapes are happening.

Looks like there might be lots of evidence too.

Guys! You have to clean up better. You are such slobs!

Of course, I am an exception. I am so neat!

Alh, nice link.

Do you think this is the first time a woman was assaulted at that frat?

Usually, isn’t it true, people aren’t caught the first time?

I don’t want to speculate. I’m reading with interest. I’m wondering if Emma Sulkowicz {momofthreeboy’s whackadoodle mattress dragger) may have inspired this woman to go to the hospital when she woke up. I’m glad she did.

I am glad the woman went to the hospital.

There are going to be a lot of lawyers hired. There are going to be some court costs.

So, let’s take a poll: given what we know at this point, who on here thinks this really happened? Is your first inclination to believe it and then wait to be proven wrong, or is it to assume it is a lie and wait to be proven wrong? Note that I am not talking about the legal process or even the investigation. I am simply talking about YOUR first impression, because I think that says a lot. I think I can predict how it will break out

Yes you can.

TV4caster: on some national news sites, this story has been reported followed by a paragraph about the Lacrosse case and how those boys were innocent victims. I’m not linking to those sites. There is already a tendency to disbelief.

I know we are all a little punch drunk at this point, but it makes me uncomfortable to make light of this story in any way.

Roofies and rape. Completely disgusting. This girl should be commended and supported for following through as she has done. The investigators also look like they are being thorough. From how the story reads it looks like the perpetrator had an accomplice too. Find them, get the evidence, then give them a fair trial.

Stories like this make me so angry. You want to change campus culture? Get this guy in prison for a decade. A real prison, not a nice one that white collar crooks go to. And give him a roommate. One who can teach him all about rape nightly. That will change campus culture.

Sorry for the outburst. I will stop posting now.

@dstark What I am really interested is to see how certain people respond when they all claim that they don’t always assume stories are made up. “They” made a point of saying that the RS article was so bizarre that they knew right away the story was a lie. I am curious if they will say they believe this one when there was an immediate rape kit done and the story doesn’t contain any unusual circumstances.

That’s fine. We will find out what happened.

Well, I would be more than happy to answer a specific question but if you just want to make snarky judgmental posts about other posters, I really don’t see the point. You do realize you are coming very close to gloating because there may be a real rape reported at Duke, right? It’s a little odd in my opinion.

al2simon: Thanks for your outburst. Outrage seems an appropriate response to me. If some of our sons are fraternity members giving women roofies, they are part of that 10% you calculated yesterday. This doesn’t seem like a lone serial rapist to me. This is a group that thinks rape is okay. How on earth do they get that idea? Where does it come from?

Of course, it is still possible this story is a fabrication. If so, that won’t mean there aren’t fraternities that give women roofies. There are too many new reports nationwide for there not to be some truth. It is not a new problem. We just haven’t been willing to deal with it.

And, by the way I do know without a doubt that there are frats with the reputation for being “rapey” and it’s not a secret and no-one thinks there is no such thing as rape, ever. What a weird concept.

TV4caster, it doesn’t matter.

The truth is going to come out in this case.

marie1234 - I don’t think that a single person on this thread would ever “gloat” over a real rape being reported anywhere.

Edited to add a word.

Here’s a thought. Instead of picking at each other, let’s fuss about rape. Marie, let’s fuss about those rapey fraternities. I am absolutely agreeing with you there. I am fussing, too. Let’s get real loud and see what we can accomplish.

Okay, well I just came on here and may have misunderstood something but the idea of a believer poll and a somewhat snarky reference to people who saw the issues with the RS story early on of which I was definitely one a happy face is just a little too close to see I told you so, as though there are posters who don’t believe there is such a thing as rape. Where the heck does this idea come from, I wonder. Anyway, it looks like the right things happened in this case.

I’m sorry you took it that way. I wasn’t trying to be snarky and I sure am not happy there was an alleged rape at Duke, nor am I gloating. I don’t know if this case is even true. It may not be. What I am trying to say is that my first thought is that the woman is telling the truth and to feel sorry for her. If I am proven wrong later then it isn’t hurting anyone. Absolutely give the guy due process and assume he is innocent until proven guilty. But I feel we do a disservice to victims if we go into every case doubting it and then waiting for proof to offer support or feel outrage.

I also feel that certain posters have indicated that they feel differently about the overall subject than I do and I am honestly trying to find out what those thoughts are, and if they vary by case. You, for example, specifically said that you did not believe the RS story. Apparently you were right. What I am trying to find out is if a case like this is any different because of the rape kit and lack or lurid details or do you see the report that the girl was drinking and immediately think “oh, I bet she wasn’t really date raped, but was just exercising bad judgement by drinking and putting herself in that position by actually having too much to drink”.

Sorry, again, if I came off as snarky, but I really am intellectually trying to understand the though process of those who obviously think differently than me.
