The list is ridiculously reach heavy- I know. But hey, go big or go home right? I’m in at UT automatically under the 8% rule, so I know I’m going to college for sure.

So, what do you guys think of my list?

I’d say you have a great shot at getting into several on your list. I’m hopeful Stern works out for you, though, because if you really love a school and FA is not a consideration, ED is the way to go. It’ll save you a ton of anxiety and asking yourself why did I get into X and not Y? See which schools don’t consider the writing section of the SAT. You should have a fairly solid chance of getting into all of those. (Not saying your 690 is bad at all – it’s just that a 1560/1600 is very impressive.) Also, make certain you apply to UT Plan II Honors just as a solid financial safety. Good luck!

I would not consider U of I a safety, considering that you are out of state. A couple people from my school were waitlisted or rejected with comparable stats (in-state).

@jc40: Yeah, I really do like NYU a lot, and FA isn’t an issue. Also, I’m doing a UT honors program for sure.

@silverturtle: Ah alright, it’s not a safety for me then.

Other than that (which is really an irrelevant labeling thing anyways), it seems like a fine list to me.

I’m not sure which major you want to go into, assuming you want to go into business since you are applying to Stern. Personally, I don’t think NYU-Stern is worth the extra money over UT-McCombs, unless you plan on going into ibanking. UT-McCombs does not fall under the top 8% rule, but given your stats, you’ll have a good shot (not a shoe-in) at Business Honors Program (BHP), which has MBA styled teaching. BHP will provide you with the better employment opportunity than Stern, because it’s well known among employers.

IMO, if you are shooting for b-school, the only schools that would beat UT-McCombs in terms of opportunity/money is MIT-Sloan and UPenn-Wharton.

I was planning on doing either finance or econ, working for a 2 to 3 years, then applying to law school.

Forgot to add, I’m doing ED II for Tepper at Carnegie.

Anyone else?

You’ll probably get into Stern and the rest will be moot

Csokane, given your excellent credentials, why not give Wharton and Sloan a shot? I would apply ED to Wharton, not Stern.

Secondly, most of your reaches are actually matches. Cornell and Cal (since you are OOS) are your only real reaches.

Finally, unlile all the other universities, UCLA does not have an undergraduate Business program.

Otherwise, I like your list.

Most of the people I’ve talked to in real life have told me my chances for Wharton are poor so I’ve sorta been discouraged from applying there. : /

I was planning on doing the business econ. major at UCLA if I decided to go there.

Thanks for the advice.

Apply there if you want to go – it’s as simple as that.

I was going to post something like this. Grades are good, SAT is great, ECs seem pretty solid.

Good luck

@silverturtle: I have to think about it. I’ve been pretty set on NYU, because I like the school. I’ll have to weigh it against Wharton’s strong points.

@coollege: Thanks!

Quick question: For the schools on this list, is having done my ec’s for only grades 11 and 12 gonna hit me hard (like make me lose admission hard)?

This might be the only obstacle you could encounter. (With no established record, the profile sheet sent from your h.s. gc will be scrutinized pretty carefully, I would imagine.) However, I wouldn’t be overly concerned…it’ll just be a bit harder. Selective schools, after all, take students who have been home schooled or who have gone to very, very small rural/private schools. They want “diversity”, right? So, don’t worry too much.

As far as not having ECs for 9th and 10th grade, I can’t really address this. Your test scores are impressive enough where this might be overlooked…I don’t know. Admissions to many of your schools is unpredictable. Why one student gets in and another with better stats does not is anyone’s guess. I do think, though, that you should try for whatever college interest you. The worst that can happen is that they’ll say no; however, if you don’t try, you’ll go through your life wondering “what if”.

There’s another high in my district that’s been established for years. They’ve sent a lot of top students to really good schools (Yale, Stanford, etc.). I moved to my school from that school after freshman year ended. That’s also partially the reason my school related ecs haven’t been done for a very long time. Clubs only started popping up around the time I was a junior.
