Alternate Major for Math Majors?

Hello everyone!

I was wondering what a good alternate major would be for someone who wants to be a Math Major.

I used to be a Computer Science Major but I failed physics so now I am applying every where as a Math Major because it is the only major whose pre reqs I will finish. ]:

Do UC’s even allow alternate majors any more?

Thank you.

You can do statistics? If you do TAP with UCLA, they will definitely consider your alt. if you don’t get into your first choice major.

Where do you want to go?

I am doing TAP.

Any UC is fine, however a lot of them require Physics for Math Majors, so that is my biggest problem…

Does Cal require physics for math majors, just wandering so I can plan…

Cal doesn’t require physics, but it does require you to take discrete mathematics which might be quite a doozy to take depending on your school.

The Berkeley math major does not require transfer students to take discrete math (Berkeley Math 55 equivalent) before transfer, although you can if there is a course articulated to it at a community college near you. If not taken before transfer, it should be taken as soon as you can after transfer.

Statistics is another obvious major for someone who takes the prerequisites for the math major. Economics is another possible major – taking the additional math courses that a math or statistics major would take can help you if you want to take more mathematical economics courses and/or go to graduate school in economics.

The Berkeley L&S CS major (BA degree) does not require physics. Santa Cruz also offers a CS major (BA degree) which does not require physics.

thanks for the info! :)

but isnt economics a heavily impacted major qt places like Berkeley, UCLA etc. ?

^You’re right, Economics is, but Math/Econ is not.
