Alternative Options to Research Internships

Greetings,

I recently finished my sophomore year and wondered where I can obtain a research internship. My first thought was to e-mail professors at my local university, but a friend of mine e-mailed the whole Physics department which was followed by rejection. Although I will send requests for permission to internship under a science/engineering related department, I anticipate the same response, so I was wondering if there exists alternatives to develop researching skills under somewhere else that’s not my local university.

Thanks,

MostDefinitely

I forgot to mention that I finished my high school sophomore year, and the rejection responses indicated that one has to be a university student in order to become an intern.
