This spring break I applied to go on an alternative spring break. I got accepted and have met the people I will go on the trip with me. Needless to say I don’t really like the group leader and other members of the group. They are all really standoffish and its not like it is cliquey it just seems that no one really gets along. A girl dropped out of the trip and the new replacement is someone I really do not like. She is my friends roommate and she already doesn’t like me.
I am already having financial issues trying to pay for this trip and a couple of family issues at home. I am wondering if I should drop out of the trip or should I suck it up? I am really torn. I don’t want to spend a week miserable with people that don’t even get along. The money and family issues are another factor. I could really use some insight. I might just be having a panic moment but I can’t tell. Any advice is appreciated!
If there is a waiting list, contact the organizers and ask to be let out of your commitment. If asked why, be truthful and say it’s a financial issue. If there is no waiting list, maybe you can ask if the organizers will reach out and try to find a replacement.
The real issue is financial. Tell the organizers that you can no longer afford to go and ask about dropping out. THe fact that you feel that you don’t like any of the group OR a replacement for one of them seems like something you might want to address yourself-how is that not one person appeals to you from the entire group? It’s hard when you’re thrown in with people you don’t know-whether or not you go on this trip, you might want to look at ways to find common ground with people you don’t know well and will need to work with. It’s bound to happen many times in college and your career and understanding how to manage it will be a good skill to have.
@sseamom -
I thought about what you said to the OP and didn’t address it. One year, my D signed up for an alternative spring break trip. She has never had issues getting along with people and can deal with people she doesn’t like - she was an RA for 3 1/2 years. On this particular trip, she met with the other people and just really didn’t gel with them. She was going to go anyway because she figured that in life you have to deal with people you don’t care for, etc. Anyway, a couple of weeks before the trip, she injured her leg so seriously that she wound up needing surgery. She backed out of the trip on a medical excuse and they found someone else to go.
With the OP, it sounded like s/he just didn’t want to go and since spring break is supposed to be fun, why do on a trip when you don’t like the people from the get go?
Maybe you could try to get a job instead, and maybe be able to work there this summer as well?
If you don’t want to go then make every effort to drop out of the trip, especially if it is causing financial hardship.
All signs point to no - tell them the financial part and use your week however you need to, and be happy about it!
This is incredibly unrealistic and is not how hiring/recruitment works these days. Any job you can get for spring break (I’m not even sure if any of these really exist beyond a few seasonal things) is probably not a job you want in the summer, where you will want to get more valuable and relevant experience to whatever you’re studying.
