What are good alternatives to facebook? The two I know are: http://www.inkampus.com and http://ww.connectu.com. Any others? What do you guys think about these two sites? Comments, suggestions?

Why would you want an alternative to Facebook? If the point of “social networking” sites is to stay connected to your friends, then Facebook is the way to go because 95% or more of your friends will use Facebook and not these other websites. Suit yourself, though.

There are many reasons for it:
- It is no longer exclusive to college students. Anyone (anywhere in the world) can join and depending on default settings see everything you have posted
- You get tons of friends, quizzes, friends invites (spams)
- There is lots of privacy issue surrounding fb (which I am sure you have read over many years)
- They are CONSTANTLY changing facebook layout. Check this facebook group to see what I mean: [New Layout Vote on Facebook](<a href=“Log into Facebook”>Log into Facebook) . Facebook do not even listen to user feedback, unless it is covered by major media outlets

Why does it matter whether or not Facebook is exclusive to college students? If you only want to add your college friends as friends on the site, then do so. More than likely, this will be the case anyway.

Ignoring requests is easy enough; it doesn’t take more than 10 seconds of your time after logging on. And again, the whole point of social networking sites is to add and keep in touch with your friends. It’s up to you who you want to add.

Uh, really? Because you’re the person who controls your privacy settings. You can hide your profile from everyone except for those you choose to add as friends if you wish.

It’s really not fair to say the layout is “constantly” changing. They’ve changed it twice since I’ve been using Facebook, and it doesn’t really take a genius to adjust to such changes. For the most part, the layout has improved anyway.

MySpace was big, then Facebook, and now Twitter (though I know no one who uses this).

I wish we would pick one and stick with it. I prefer Facebook. MySpace I spent to much time on updating my profile, changing designs – nothing beneficial.

On Facebook I get on check messages, and get off.

If you’re Chinese xiaonei.com lol, but seriously, none of ya friends will be on there

I prefer Myspace. Not To Found of Facebook.

I find it interesting that these two comments are the OP’s sole posts…hmm…

Seriously, if you aren’t using Facebook in college, you’re really behind. Even people who never go on the site still have accounts. I can see staying off social networking sites entirely, but if you’re on other sites but not on Facebook, you’re probably missing most of your college’s discussions.

Fiona: Thanks for that link. According to wikipedia, xiaonei is a complete clone of facebook but open only to college students. But, I cant read chinese :)

MHC2011: I have made posts before. Looks like this site is not counting it. If you look at School Girls’s post count above, it says 0 posts. Weird. Also if college dicsussion is on facebook (which I am not aware of), isnt that same purpose as this site?

SS Journey: Facebook works for some people. If you have a small group and no one else knows much about you or you dont do much activities (join groups, apps, etc) then you are fine with it. If you do not fall in this category, its different. Regarding it only changing twice, you must have joined recently (in a year or so). For me, its around 3+ years. The privacy problems I was talking about is actually where it shows posts or pictures where it is not supposed too. See the link I posted above or see this google search results: Google

I am not saying facebook is bad. But there are always better alternatives than facebook (if you know the history of facebook as well as where it is heading). And it helps to find the better alternative

No, this is a site about college admissions discussion. If you’re already in college and you want to, say, know what’s going on on campus tonight, this isn’t going to help you; Facebook is. Facebook is where current college students do their networking.

And whether other services exist and are better is irrelevant, because they don’t have the userbase that Facebook does. If you go to my college’s main Facebook group, we have more than 5,000 members and a very active wall. If you go on MySpace, they have about 200, and the community is dead. It’s not even a question which to join.

Thank you, OP, for taking five minutes of my life that I will never get back.

I suggest we all stop posting here.

Maddy1, post a link to your Facebook profile.

everyone should just use twitter
