Alternatives to UT Austin [top 7% rank, business major, prefer within 3 hours of Houston]

Does TAMU still offer automatic admission to the top 10%? It appears that way on their website but I recall someone mentioning they may lower it.

Currently students who are in-state and true top 10% are guaranteed auto admission to TAMU, but NOT guaranteed their desired major.
(State legislature would need to vote to bring it down to 6-7%, which is mentioned often).

It definitely pays to apply EARLY (by end of August, for sure), for a couple reasons. A&M has ‘rolling’ admissions. Students who want Mays Business or Visualization, need to apply first week in August-those majors fill QUICKLY, and when they’re full…they are full.
On campus housing selection goes by time stamp dorm deposit is paid. Literally, time stamp. Can’t pay housing deposit until you have acceptance.

These are the 33 4-year schools that offer a business major within 200 miles of the 77007 zip code (i.e. middle of Houston): College Navigator - Search Results.

I looked at the net prices for low-income families which eliminated the vast majority of private schools. I then looked at schools that were classified as residential campuses, or were classified as commuter campuses but had more than 80% of first-year students living on-campus (those two schools are specified below). These are the schools I’d suggest your mentee take a closer look at, sorted from closest to furthest away.

  • U. of Houston: About 38k undergrads, 1 mile away

  • Prairie View A&M: An HBCU with about 8100 undergrads, about 41 miles away. Classified as a commuter campus but 89% of first-year students live on-campus.

  • Sam Houston State: About 18k undergrads, about 67 miles away

  • Texas A&M: About 57k undergrads, about 81 miles away

  • Stephen F Austin: About 9900 undergrads, about 135 miles away

  • Texas State: About 34k undergrads about 153 miles away; classified as a commuter campus but 85% of first-year students live on-campus

  • Trinity: About 2500 undergrads and about 187 miles away

Yes. Fly In programs where the school pays for everything including flights and provides all accommodations. Extremely competitive programs

U of Houston has a strong business program. They have five undergrad real estate business courses and an undergrad degree certificate. I’ve heard that about one-third of UH freshmen are first generation so your student should feel at home and the U has lots of resources to cater to its diverse population. Your student is obviously strong academically so I would recommend the Bauer Business Honors Program. UH has the second most number of beds on campus in Texas behind Texas A&M. Of course, UT-Austin has a plethora of close off campus housing options.

My nephews were both first gen and were Top 10% from east Texas. They were both admitted to Texas A&M’s business school. I believe nearly everyone in the top 10% is still admitted to Mays Business. This is a super option if the student visits and finds their people.

Being top 7% doesn’t preclude one from getting into UT McCombs. First gen helps. The school rigor helps and certainly so does the test score. 1400+ minimum; maybe 1500. Leadership like team captains and student body wide leadership also seems to help.

SMU just completed a nice business complex and is eagerly seeking first gen students. It offers to cover full COA for Pell Grant eligible students that are scholarship eligible without aid consideration. You didn’t mention that your student needs fin aid but they have supportive programs, regardless of need.

And maybe a full ride depending on GPA and SAT or ACT score: University Scholarships - Office of Scholarship Services

My students’ UT applications are completed in the fall semester so the most recent GPA they can report is at the end of junior year; however, they must report their fall semester GPA once it’s available. I haven’t had any UT applicant in my classes who crossed the auto admit threshold (either into or out of) with the GPA update. I do have students who were not auto admit but still were accepted. When the students receive the results, they don’t indicate auto admit or not.
For the student you’re helping, I would suggest that they apply to UTSA. UTSA business school is decent, and regularly transfers students to UT. UTSA has rolling admission. Every year I urge my students to complete their UTSA applications by the end of September (of course most of them don’t but some do), and every year I have students receiving not only admission but also scholarship offers by Halloween. UTSA overall has a laidback atmosphere, in which the serious students stand out very quickly and could gain access to more opportunities (working on funded projects, assisting in funded research, internships, etc.) as early as the first winter break.

Yes guaranteed admission is based on rank at the end of junior year. This is directly from the UT Admissions website:
