Alternatives to Vertical Blinds?

The vertical blinds on our sliding door have been in the process of breaking for years and I think they’ve finally died. I never really did like them, but they provided privacy and got the job done. We have a nice window treatment along the top of the door, but now that I need to replace them I’d like something different. I’ve looked on line a little and it seems that now there are cordless vertical blinds and that may be what I do in a pinch, but I’m sure there is something better. I’m very challenged when it comes to decorating and we are have a grad party next month so I don’t have much time to fool with this.

Any suggestions, or what do you have on your sliding door?

Thanks.

Expensive option: we have doors with blinds built in. They’re behind a 3rd pane of glass and you can raise or lower them with a slider on the side or twist them open or closed with a lever. By Pella.

My Pella door, admittedly not a slider, has blinds between 2 panes of glass. They do not raise or lower but when pivoted to horizontal are hardly noticed.

If it’s a casual room, would something like these panels work? http://www.jcpenney.com/jcpenney-home-naples-grommet-top-bamboo-panel/prod.jump?ppId=1a09b3e&catId=cat1003760002&deptId=dept20022800026&&_dyncharset=UTF-8

In front of some french doors, I have grommet top curtain panels made of Sunbrella fabric. I attached a thin clear pole to the top edge to use to open/close them so the fabric wouldn’t get soiled from handling. The curtain rods extend far enough beyond the doors to allow the panels to fully stack back so they don’t get in the way.

Shutters are popular around here for sliding doors that require privacy, like in a bedroom for example, but are obviously a pricier option.

Have used honeycomb shades in old house and current one. I like Bali and chose cordless. Advantage- no cords, disadvantage- need to lean down to raise them. Try to catch sales for 20% (?) off at Lowes or other stores. Old house had French door style- ie wood space on all sides. Currently more glass. Hung shades from top of space door are in, not on doors. Can open either side as desired. If you go with cords be sure they are right/left so as to be at the outsides of the opening. When we had many shades installed used the measuring service with 9 free installations. I did the sliding doors myself. Need to follow directions for measuring- measure at top and bottom since things like baseboards may lessen dimensions. If you decide on these feel free to PM me for further advice.

At put former house, we had tab insulated curtains. The key was…the rod was longer than the slider so when the curtains were open, they weren’t covering any of the window. We loved the look.

This house,…no window coverings at all…the slider is well insulated, and looks out onto the woods.

I despise vertical blinds. I love my cordless honeycomb shades on windows, but would worry if they’d really hold up on a door. Our dining room door has sheers on a rod with enough extra length they can pull out of the way.

My current conundrum is what sort of shades or curtains to put on a west-facing screen porch. It’s only a real problem for an hour or two, but dh was grumbling today.

I’d put some kind of roman shade on that screened porch.
