Good grief, now it’s 2 snipers. 10 officers shot. 3 dead.
omg, 3 officers now dead. Open season.
“But we are all safer when we are all armed.” Yeah. Right.
Sylvan, I agree with you. It’s all talk. I’ve been trying to say more but I can’t figure out how to without being political. The problem has to be addressed systemically and the powers that be have just about zero interest in doing that.
I am a pacifist to the extreme. I don’t pretend to know what the answer is. I wish I did. I do know that when my Black and Brown friends leave my house (in a predominantly white area) at night, I get a lump in the pit of my stomach until I hear that they’re home. I can’t imagine what it’s like to be a parent of a Black or Brown child.
On the other hand, I’m an academic. I try to use history to expose the underlying wounds that perpetuate racism and distrust through the present day. That is what is in my toolbox so it’s what I use. I don’t pretend it’s enough but it’s what I can offer.
Apparently only one of the Baton Rouge cops fired his gun, Salamondi. His father is a police captain and his mother is a retired police captain. I think it will be impossible for Sterling’s family to receive justice. The blue wall will close ranks and the Dallas killings will only make it happen faster.
A couple of friends of FB friends are circulating conspiracy articles about how the Dallas shootings have been orchestrated to divert attention away from the Black victims of police shootings, discourage discussion about the victims/racism and excesses committed by LEOs, and rally support/sympathy for LEOs and their supporters.
That’s because it is so very complicated, with a lot of politically incorrectness and things people do not want to hear. I’ve become numb.
Now maybe there’s a bomb.
The man who called 911 and reported Sterling was a homeless man who had been pestering him for money and wouldn’t leave until Sterling told him he had a gun and wanted to be left alone. I’m not even surprised. Of course Sterling had a gun to protect himself and of course it ended up not turning out that way.
The suspects photo is on TV now. Hope he is captured soon. Police chief says suspect may have planted a bomb. Those who ramped up ant-all police rhetoric need to tamp it down. The vast majority of police officers just want to protect the public. I know several personally and they are good people. They are not Barney Fife. That comment was uncalled for.
Anyone who promotes or circulates conspiracy theories should be shunned forever by reasonable people. It’s the same kind of mindset as people who insist that Orlando and Sandy Hook were “false flag operations.”
If it turns out that these three police officers were killed by snipers with some sort of assault weapon, as is being reported, will the NRA still oppose any regulation of that kind of weapon?
A concealed handgun? No, not unless he had a permit. Surely, Romani will be along to answer that question any minute.
You’ll need to pack a lunch, if you’re waiting for the NRA to praise killing cops for watching a protest march.

This.
They released a picture of what they think is one of the shooters. He’s open carrying a rifle. (Legal in Texas.) I hope this isn’t an innocent person who was just open carrying (yes, that statement feels like poison in my mouth but anyways…). His picture will be forever linked to this whether he’s a shooter or not.
4th officer just died. No word on civilian injuries that I’ve heard.
4 dead now. Maybe we can just roll all the events into one - mass shooting, terrorist event, police kill minorities, police get shot, can we talk lottery jackpot?
Anyone know a country at peace?
Apologies.
It was used to make the point that not every police officer is always capable of doing the right thing, at the right time, every time. They have different temperaments, different capacities, different capabilities. They’re as human as the rest of us.
Not to beat a dead horse (well, it hasn’t been beaten to death here…), but isn’t it illegal for a convicted felon to possess a firearm? A felony in itself? Sterling was a convicted felon in possession of a firearm.
As I stated previously, these cops probably did a terrible job at de-escalating it, but I figure they probably were pretty amped up if they were at all briefed on the situation. Maybe that part of the process should be examined too.
D says there are tweets saying the guy being shown as a suspect is being shown walking around by Dallas Morning News video during the shooting… not in an elevated position.
I take it back… D has seen the video - the ‘suspect’ was a co-organizer of the event and gave his gun to a cop when the shooting started.
They’ve been calling him a suspect for how long now (half hour) instead of a person of interest. If this guy gets killed, I hope someone is held accountable.
