Always Alone

It’s almost the end of my freshman year and I still have no close friends. I used to hang out with one girl on my floor but we haven’t talked in a few weeks and we didn’t have that much in common. My roommate is very social and is always going out with a different group of friends. I tag along with her sometimes but I often feel uncomfortable. I talk to a few people at work and in my classes but I don’t hang out with anyone outside of class. It’s starting to get to me. The weekends are especially lonely. I joined a whole bunch of groups but never found any good friends. I’m worried the rest of my college career will be like this.

Now that I’m in my mid-late 20’s, I’ve come to realize that almost everyone has felt this way at times. So please know that you’re definitely not the only one who’s feeling lonely and isolated. My Junior year got really hard when most of my friends cliqued off, became super caddy, and it became blatantly obvious that I needed to find another group. I decided to start taking jiu jitsu classes at a local club, which REALLY helped. The physical activity made me feel good, but just having a “back-up” place to go when I wanted to be around people made so much of a difference. And you know what I’ve also realized? It’s actually way easier to reach out to people than we all think. During my “tough year” I asked one of my classmates if she wanted to go take a jewelry making class with me. She said sure, and we’re still good friends almost 10 years later. Also, if your schedule permits, try taking (or trying to audit) Social Psych next semester. Because that class really put a lot of this into perspective for me.

Aww, cheer up! Like the poster above me stated, most people go through this at some point! I know I felt like this the beginning of last year. You really should think of activities that you really enjoy doing, and join some kind of club that pertains to it. There are sports, exercise classes, yoga, and various clubs you can join. Remember to be friendly because there are lots of people who you cross paths with every day that probably feel just like you. It gets better.

I’m nearing the end of my freshman year and I feel the same. I hate my roommates, we have different lifestyles and I don’t party. I send a lot of nights and weekends in the library and on Netflix. I don’t know what to tell you… sometimes when the loneliness starts to get unbearable I go to the gym or ride my bike. I joined a club but they are already a tight knit bunch of friends so I stick out. I just found one girl who feels the same as me and we try to hang out at least twice a week. Just try to find one person you can stand I guess, I got to know people by asking them to eat with me in the dining hall or buying them food if they are commuters.
