Am I a loser?

I applied to UTD, SMU, Rice, Harvard, and WashU
I have a 5.0 GPA out of 6.0, which translates into 3.8 out of 4.0.
I’m rank 14 out of 606.
I have an SAT score of 2130: 800 in reading, 640 in math, and 690 in writing.
ACT - 28; SAT Bio 640; SAT Lit 740
I’m in NHS, Latin Club, UIL Spelling Team, Church Choir, Church Youth group, President of Altar servers.
I’m full IB. ALL my classes are IB.
I got rejected from Rice, Harvard, waitlisted at WashU
I got accepted into SMU with a $15000 scholarship. go figure.
I got full-ride to UTD, which virtually anybody with an IB diploma does.
Am I a loser? Is this typical?
I feel like I’m the dummest kid in the world and that all the hard work I have done is completely wasteful.

You shouldn’t be surprised.

you are for sure the dumbest* kid in the world

Without any hooks and pretty uninspiring EC’s, you didn’t have much of a chance at Harvard and possibly the other schools, about which I know less. I think you should have applied for more schools. But you are by no means a loser, unless you’ve locked yourself in your room obsessing about this.

You are definitely not a loser. This was an especially difficult year, so it seems. You received some very good offers, congratulations! Yes, you are disappointed but it is time to move on. All of your hard work was not in vain, you pull yourself together, take advantage of what you’ve been offered, keep working hard, you can always transfer later. Things have a funny way of working out in the long run…

Southern Methodist University is an outstanding university. One of my boyhood friends who graduated from Harvard, Dr. Steve Sverdlik, is a professor of philosophy there and he is one of the most brilliant people I have ever met. Count yourself very lucky if you should ever get to study with him. SMU must be darn good for Sverdlik to choose to be a professor there for so many years.

You’re NOT a loser.

collegecarla and morganhil make great points. You should be proud of what you’ve done.

You’re list didn’t seem to have enough variation safety, target, reach wise. Your reaches would be reaches for even the most intelligent kids out there.

You have to realize that kids getting into Harvard are scoring on an average a 35 on the ACT (there are literally thousands of kids that score a perfect 36 on their ACT’s each year). If they don’t have that kind of ACT score they have done things that have brought them recognition at the NATIONAL level. But guess what, my wealthiest friends (if you are interested in wealth) never went to college at all.

TOP 50 Universities
Where one goes to school has little to do with expected self generated wealth accumulation
Success in life is not determined by which school one attends.
The top 5 schools are very important to those who base their self worth on their education. The education is not necessarily better, but the name recognition makes them feel validated in the presence of others.

Loser? I don’t know about that. You’re well above average.
Attention seeker: Definitely.

dude…800reading and 640math…sat math is like easiesy thing in the world…
(admire your 800 reading…)

Chill with the internet whining.

I am not sure how you translate 5 out of 6 to 3.8/4.0 since it seems to reflect more of a 3.333 GPA proportionally.

SMU usually gives good money for national merit. Is that how you got 15k?

Fullride at UT Dallas is a great deal and it is a fine school.
