Am I absolutely hopeless?

I always wanted to go to Upenn and really tried hard in school but my GPA didn’t quite come out as anticipated. It’s a measly 3.6 - maybe 3.7 - and I haven’t taken much AP classes or Honors classes either. I was transferred into a public school in Hawaii from Korea, in the middle of my sophomore year and I struggled quite much. My counselor did write me a recommendation about how I’m still “adjusting” to the new environment but I’m nonetheless stressed. And my SAT scores are strictly mediocre as well. Do I even have a chance here?

ACT English 29 Math 33 Reading 32 Science 36 Composite 33
SAT Biology 790 Korean 780 Math II 610 (I have no idea what happened here)

It’s not looking too good, to be honest. Are you Korean? If yes, that will make your life even harder, as Korean applicants usually have outstanding numbers. Well, you already applied and all- and it’s not the end of the world if Penn doesn’t accept you. Let’s think about more positive matters…

I don’t think you’re hopeless at all. I got in ED and my GPA is slightly lower than yours. Also, I would retake the Math II. My ACT math was a 32, and the first time I took the Math II I got a 690, and the second time I got a 780 (after not really studying either time). Scores alone aren’t going to make or break you at Penn and I think you are pretty much in the Penn range. It’s probably going to come down to your ECs and “Why Penn” essay. Good luck!

You will need to elaborate for an accurate chance. I mean, the application process isn’t just some mechanical process where you grind in the SAT’s, AP’s, GPA, and then accept students. Your scores are lower than the average yes, but maybe you have something else that shines?
