Am I Applying to the Right Colleges?

<p>I’m one of those “right-brained” thinkers: I focus on the big picture, am a lover of literature and philosophy, and will definitely be majoring in English when I go to college. Question is, though: am I applying to schools that are geared towards fostering my knack for English or should I notify my Guidance Counselor that I’m applying to different schools?</p>

<p>That wouldn’t be my college list, although seems like those schools may be good, if not decent for your major.</p>

<p>It might help if you decide on some bigger picture criteria - urban vs rural, big vs small, region of the country.<br>
Just a thought</p>

<p>Also, check out St Johns in Annapolis or NM - they have a great books curriculum. Hampshire seemed pretty right-brainy, too.</p>

<p>Rural or suburban, small, Northeast. Some of those schools include Trinity, Swarthmore, and Vassar, to name a few, all of which are some distance away. I know Shimer is a Great Books college, but the fact that that school is insanely small (125 students) is not what I’m looking for. Would you say, however, that some of these schools are somewhat more geared towards Liberal Arts (I know for a fact Colgate is)?</p>

<p>colgate, as you said, definitely fits your description. As does bucknell. They really emphasized their english program during the tour. Same with skimore. very arts oriented with a great english department</p>

<p>also i would look at hamilton. it fits your description perfectly. northeast, small, rural, and VERY geared towards writing</p>

<p>I ask myself the same question a lot too. I’m still not sure if the colleges I’m applying to are right for me. I might have to steal this thread idea at some point haha</p>

<p>Colgate and Bucknell are definately matches. Emerson is pretty artsy too, but I’m not familiar with their english program.</p>

<p>Most of these colleges are out of my reach, but there are some in there. Thanks for the list; I know I’m at least applying to some of the right colleges.</p>

<p>they are all quite conservative for LACs, with the major exceptions of skidmore and emerson.</p>

<p>I won’t be able to be accepted to Amherst or Haverford; my GPA is too low, my standardized testing is dreadful, etc.</p>

<p>Conservatism doesn’t bother me none. I couldn’t give two craps about politics; not a fan of it, never will be. It’s about “not voting for that guy” rather than the good ol’ “vote for me.”</p>
