Carleton: $18k in loans over four years if package is consistent
Williams: almost free, no loans

I want to major in history and/or religion. Carleton is my first choice; I applied to Williams at my mom’s behest, and I’m concerned it’s not a great fit. I’m unable to visit either school. From what I’ve read, I love Carleton’s sense of humor, Midwestern charm, and generally laid back student body. I get the impression Williams has a far stronger drinking culture and is overall more “mainstream,” i.e. preppy and partying. Thoughts? Should I forget about Carleton and just go with the money? I feel silly even considering taking on the debt, but maybe it’s not totally unreasonable?

Williams has its own quirky sense of humor, with purple cows and Not-Popes and bop-swording. All colleges have a component that likes to drink and party – these students can be avoided. $18k is a lot of money and will probably be more like $27k by the time it’s paid off. I’d also guess it’s easier to transfer from Williams to Carleton than vice versa if you aren’t happy with your choice.

People turn down Harvard and Yale to go to Williams. Your mom is awesome for having you apply and you should be thanking her, not stressing her out by making your first “adult” decision and incurring 20K in debt in the process.

Go to Williams and be grateful for such a TREMENDOUS opportunity.

If I was your mom…
