am I committing academic/social suicide?

The classes I originally wanted got all filled up so, I’m planning to take Chem 1a, Math 16a, College Writing R4B, nutritional sciences and toxicology 10, and Psychology 2 for a total of 17 units. I would have a final monday-friday but no two finals on one day.

Most of those classes are easy, but I’m not sure I would want to take five of them in conjunction, especially your first semester.

I would advise dropping one of those classes which is not a requirement for your major. Perhaps try a seminar instead: fss.berkeley.edu.

I tried to get into a couple of the seminars but they were either cancelled or the waitlists were full

Well, if you’re that set on doing it, you probably can. That social suicide part might come to fruition, though.

Doesn’t sound like suicide to me, but it all depends on what you can handle. Keep that schedule for now. If it is too hard, you can drop a class later.

I would honestly just drop a class unless you want to be trapped in your room every day thinking about what to study. A class like Psych 2 can be taken anytime and is fairly easy, but you still have to study for the midterms and the final. You should save these classes to balance out your future courses (which will be much more difficult than math16 and chem1a).
And college writing may or may not be a joke (depending on your gsi), but it’s still a R/C class so you’re gonna be writing essays.

I wouldn’t expect to have much of a social life, but you’ll definitely be inside a fair bit.

College Writing R4B, while easy, did get fairly annoying for me. If you have good work habits, you’ll find yourself writing essays and reading the books perhaps a little more frequently than you’d like; if you’re a procrastinator like me, you’ll just find yourself pulling an all-nighter or two for each major essay (of which there are, admittedly, quite few).

There’s really no reason to take all those classes at once. You’ll just be stressed out constantly and will end up having multiple midterms/papers due in each week. You will need to put a good amount of time and effort into each of those classes to get A’s (you don’t want to end up with like B+s in Psych and Toxicology).

You’re going to have plenty of time to take filler classes, don’t stuff them in now.

thanks for all the advice everyone!
