Am I completely screwed? (chances)

Hello. I’m currently a junior (rising senior) and I’ve basically procrastinated all throughout high school. My UW GPA by the end of this year will be roughly a 3.0 (terrible, i know). My SAT score is a 2230 (retaking), and I’ve taken 7 APs so far (6 this year), 12-13 by the end of high school.

9th grade: 3.07
10th: 3.28
11th (this year): 3.07 (dropped, i know =/)

My cumulative GPA is a 3.0 because I took 8 semesters of high school classes in middle school, which I basically didn’t care about, which killed my GPA.

So, am I completely screwed for College Park? Or do I still have a chance? (I’m in state, btw)

Thanks :)

I’d make sure that you include in your app (maybe part of an essay?) about taking the 8 semesters of high school classes in middle school. However, your high school GPA (without the middle school years) is still pretty low. You’ve got a strong SAT score, and because you’re in-state you aren’t completely screwed on getting admitted. No good chances for merit $ or honors/gemstone/CP Scholars, though. Good luck. Get some letters from teachers that you expect to give you the strongest recommendations.

Do you mean eight classes in middle school? Or eight semesters, because in the majority of places middle school only lasts six semesters.

Eight semesters worth of classes. Meaning, 4 classes* 2 semesters/year = 8 semesters of H.S. classes total.

definitely in… Im guessing you will be recommended for scholars. Get straight A’s senior year and you can beg your way into honors

Okay, that makes sense.
I’d say in due to SAT score, and if you could get your grades up that would help a lot.

Thanks so much for the input, everyone. :]

Wait…they actually look at senior year grades? Because in my school system (probably like many), the first semester ends in late January which would be after the deadline for applications.

I guess in my case, ultimately, it’ll be a question of how much CP values SATs and rigor of coursework in its admissions. Since I’m getting the exact same grades in all honors freshman year and in 6 APs this year, they’ll probably immediately know I procrastinated. :[

Almost all schools (unless you apply ED) look at first semester grades. Ending in late January is pretty uniform. (On the East Coast at least)

Also apply by the priority deadline on December 1, and the first section (name birthday etc) by November first.
The admit rate is ridiculously low for regular decision.

^Yeah, I’ve heard. One of my friends didn’t get in b/c she applied regular. :[ Thanks for the advice!

One more question for anyone viewing this thread (sorry for asking so many): I’m getting a C for the semester in one of my APs, Though my GPA this semester will still be about a 3.14 (ridiculously low, I know). Will this alone kill my chances? Thanks :]

I would say in for gen, but not scholars, gemstone or honors and no merit. What is your weighted gpa.?

As far as grades, they will take your mid-terms, or at least that is what they did for ds 2 yrs ago, he was also on 4/2 block schedule.

Your problem is it shows that you have the ability, but your grades say you don’t apply yourself, and that could frighten them. The gpa is very low, as other people have also acknowledged. They will look the other way if you have a ton of ECS to show thatyou are spreading yourself thin with a demanding schedule and ECS. No EC’s then I would say that you are on the cusp. The 1 C for a semester is one thing, a C in AP for final is another.

The thing is for the class of 14, to realize is that every yr UMDCP are receiving more and more apps. So you want to highlight every positive aspect you have.

i would say you are def in because your grades aren’t that bad and your SAT score is excellent (no need to retake). I’d say honours, scholars, or gemstone is a stretch at this point, as is merit money, but admission should not be an issue so long as you properly indicate your desire to go to maryland. if you blow them off with your stats, you risk rejection.

and i really hate it when people say “it’s ok, get straight As first semester senior year.” it’s as if you haven’t been trying all of HS and can magically just turn some switch and become a perfect student. it doesn’t work that way. you’ve prolly been working hard all of HS, and expecting you to shoot your grades up so astronomically, while it may be technically possible, is not an endeavour worth the overwhelming effort.

your middle school grades won’t be an issue. if you really want, ask your GC to put in a note about it.

dont be suprised if you get in and dont be surprised if you dont get in …
your SATs are good which would probably make up for the low GPA
and md does not look at midterm grades
because i got in and they didnt request anything about midterms…or senior grades for that matter…

Thanks for the advice again, everyone
…Wait, so now I’m confused. Do they look at senior year grades or not if you
re apply priority? Because like Sportsmerci09 said, I’ve always thought they didn’t…but now people are telling me that they do.

And my WGPA is ~3.7-3.8.

@bulletandpima: Yeah, I know. They’re gonna take one look at my grades throughout the years and realize I’m a student who lacks motivation :< Getting mostly Bs in all honors as well as in 6 APs this year will just tell them that I can most definitely handle the work, but I’ve just been consistently lazy. Which will probably screw me over. =/ Thanks for your input!

that’s why pima says that you should try to work in an angle (truthfully) which may explain what else you had going on. (lots of ec’s? any community service? anything else?) good luck. Make sure you apply to some other schools with a higher % accept rate, just in case, but good luck with UMD!!!
