Am I disadvantaged because my school does allow any hard classes until junior year?

My first two years, not by my own choice, were very NOT rigorous. I was able to double up on math and get two credits, but other than that, there were no weighted classes, no honors, no AP’s that I had the option to take. My junior year I was able to take 2 AP’s and 3 more weighted classes, and senior year I am taking 3 AP’s and 2 more weighted.

Are other schools like this? And will I look like a slacker, even though I had no choice?

Schools vary in how many APs they offer and when students can take them. That’s why the wording of the rating that your HS GC will mark on the CA School Report is:

This question came up when I was doing the tour with my D.

The answer from more than one highly competitive school – was that you should take the Most Demanding courses available at your school, and we won’t penalize you because your school did not provide you the opportunity to do more.
