I want to take a Multivariable Calculus course at one of the City University of NY colleges next semester, but they’re saying that I can’t. Based on my resume above, is it worth it to insist on taking the class? How impressive would it look?

And what are my chances of getting into an Ivy? (1st choice Brown, 2nd Harvard)

Both of those are reaches for anybody.
(I know at least one 4.0/2400 who didn’t get into Brown).
You have as good a chance as anybody, the problem is that “anybody” still has a long-shot at best.

ha. your recs destroy mine (3.5 unweighted gpa?) and lots of ppl commented on how i have a chance. due to the internship and research factor i would say you have at least a 75% chance. good luck!
oh and p.s. nice asianness ^.^

I would say as a NY resident there is no doubt you would get into some schools at Cornell. Harvard and Brown accept many with your profile and reject more. 75% chance? Untrue and, actually, absurd.

I think it’s not that uncommon for seniors to take multivariable, actually, so I guess it would not seem that impressive. On the other hand, if you are truly interested in math and want to take it for the sake of the class itself, then I think it’s a great idea to go for multivariable.

I wouldn’t necessarily agree. If he/she is following an accelerated track outside of what her school usually has its students go through then I say it is impressive that he/she is taking that extra step.

Your unweighted GPA is kinda low for ivy’s because tons of kids applying have 4.0, but your class rank’s great. You might want to retake the SATs to get in the 2300s. Other than that your EC’s are great and you are likely Ivy bound.
