Am I just the most "on the line" person ever?

Well I applied Harvard SCEA, got deferred.
Then WUSTL, got waitlisted.
Caltech? Waitlisted.
MIT…Waitlisted.

Aaaaaahhhhhh. It would just be cruel if Harvard waitlisted me.

I’d say you’re more “on the list”, but that’s just me.

I got waitlisted at WUSTL too. @classicgirll hahaha!

@classicgirll
maybe i’m more almost on the list?

Harvard, and other selective colleges, employ actuaries to calculate their declination rate. For example, in 2011, Harvard admitted 2,158 students KNOWING that approximately 24% to 25% of accepted students would turn them down (Harvard has about 1650 beds).

Colleges only go to their waitlist when their declination numbers are off. Last year Harvard admitted 31 students from their waitlist. While Harvard has never published the number of waitlisted students, Yale does make these numbers available (2010 = 932, 2011 = 996).

If you assume the same waitlist numbers for Harvard – the stars really have to be in alignment for a student to be accepted off the waitlist. It’s not impossible, but pretty darn close to it. Embrace the colleges that accept you, as you can be happy almost anywhere!

I have no idea whether this is true or not but I was waitlisted at WUSTL as well and my parents work with a college planning network which told them that often schools waitlist strong applicants who have really good stats (or just a very good application in general) because they know that their school will probably not be that applicant’s first choice. I don’t know, if it’s true then it’s terrible, because how can a school judge what any of their applicant’s first choice is?

^ Whether or not that is actually true, it does give me hope, because when you get waitlisted, you just don’t feel “good enough.” Also, I think that a school can determine their ranking to the student based on the passion put into the application. I had just got deferred from Harvard when I applied to WUSTL, so my while I had a good/great application, my heart was not in it. I think WUSTL could see that.

Yeah, i’m not too concerned about the WashU waitlist. I guess they have something called Tufts Syndrome in which they waitlist candidates they know probably wont go… I guess they track campus visits and interview requests. But Harvard, MIT, and Caltech obviously don’t have that policy. I just want the 29th to be here… And all these likely letters being sent out doesnt make me feel any better either.

WUStL gets a lot of grief on CC, but it does not align with the experience of my D who is currently a junior at Harvard. She had near perfect stats with just one sitting for each of the standardized tests and they made every effort to get her to attend. She was unhooked and we are not low income yet they paid for her to visit the campus for an event before the apps were due and offered to pay for her to attend an admitted students event. I suspect that perry772’s heart not being into his application is the better analysis.

But how can they tell if your heart is in the application or not if they don’t have a supplemental essay? I didn’t use a different personal statement for the Common App when I sent my application to WUSTL; I sent the same essay to every Common App school.

sigh. I just want to know if I’m in at my other colleges, especially Harvard considering I applied SCEA.

The wait is literally killing me, we have 11 days left!

I know deferral to acceptance is a long shot… but i can’t help but hope :(

Same here, orchdork :frowning:
Man, that’s way too many waitlists. Seeing as they’re rare, consider yourself lucky? Lol

Sent from my SPH-D710 using CC

I know! I knew waitlists were rare, so i was surprised that i got waitlisted at those three school; i havent been rejected anywhere yet. And im an Asian male! :O

Awesome. I just got waitlisted at another school. This is seriously starting to get old. Just want Harvard’s to come out now.

Sorry if this post comes in too late, but if it’s any consolation, I got wait listed in five schools - Tufts (no comment), Williams, Brown, Columbia and Harvard. Yeah, last Thursday was a pretty bad day…don’t know about you, but I like to think of them more as the college commending you for a good effort. Still beats getting rejected.
