So I’m doing my UC applications right now. I’d like to apply to Berkeley, Los Angeles, Santa Cruz and Santa Barbara. Though after much consideration I think that I may be just kidding myself. My mom passed away right at the start of my academic career at CCC, resulting in very poor academics.

I’m doing much better now (4.0 this semester, 3.6 last semester, 3.5 Prior semester) though my UC GPA is still a load of garbage at 3.02. I’ve done TAPS, I’ve started two clubs on campus that are in regards to my major (major is polisci/peace and conflict studies for UCB), and I have also finished my IGETC/assist pre-requisites.

But, from what I see on this forum I do not have a chance. Should I axe my efforts for admittance to these schools?

You’ve done TAPS.
If you don’t apply to UCs now, all that effort goes into waste.
You have your reasons, and your essays will explain your poor academic record. The poor grades in your earlier years will cover up for the continuous upward trend in your GPA. You have a good chance to Santa Cruz and Santa Barbara, and I’m sure LA and Cal will look into your reason.

I don’t know too much about the CSU’s but at the UC’s I completely agree with dhl, you have a good chance at SC and SB, and Cal and UCLA will surely take into account your reasons, number one top: write good essays :)

I agree with dhl3…Apply! Explain the lower grades in an essay…sorry to hear about the passing of your mom… You have a good trend in your GPA. With the details explained in an essay, I’d say you have a good chance.

CSU’s for poli sci: I’d say none really stand out. SDSU, CSU Long Beach, San Jose State, and Fresno State are probably the largest and hold the most prestige.

Also UC’s take into consideration grade trends! In your personal statement just explain why your first grades were not a good example of what kind of student you are.

no way, apply dood. your personal statement will help you out. just keep getting A’s and you should be fine. I have a friend who got into UCLA with a 2.8…

you’re in sc&sb
i think you have a really good chance for la with TAP

I was in your situation (grade wise) and ended up with a transfer GPA of 2.9ish got into sd, irvine, sb, davis…rejected from la and berkeley for political science
