Any help regarding what I should mention in my transcript or simply my general chances of getting in will be greatly appreciated!
I am currently an incoming senior in high school. I take part in the two year International Baccalaureate (IB) high school course. IB is a set program of courses to kind of prep your for college.
My top 3 IB classes can be considered AP.
So my “AP” classes are Chinese lang and lit, English lang and lit and Theater.
I believe I can get 39-42 out of the total 45 IB points.
If I had to calculate my GPA from grades in IB it would be around 3.7 or 3.8
However I did not score too high on my practice SAT (around 1250 out of 1600) , I’m currently working really hard on improve my score for the SATs and I believe I can get at least around 1400 on the final test.
Additionally I am from Hong Kong (born and raised), mother is Taiwanese father is American so I was brought up in a bilingual and bicultural home. Can I use this to my advantage? Will this aspect of my background help? And should I mention it in my college essay?
Extracurriculars include:
Sports -
- Playing contact rugby nationally for the HK team for around 3 years (playing club rugby additionally for around 6 years)
- Touch rugby captain freshman and sophomore year
- Coached freshman touch rugby school team junior year
Theater related -
- Part of the school play, freshman to senior year
- Designed the set of the school play junior year
Student Gov -
- Class president freshman and sophomore year
- School treasurer junior year
Other -
- Champion Chinese speech competition junior year
- Created an organization called ‘sock monsters’ using 100% recycled clothing to make toys to sell (all money goes to charity) as a way to raise awareness about the destructive fast fashion industry
- Awarded board of governors scholarship award Sophomore year
- Helped coordinate the ‘One Billion Rising Event’ this year in Hong Kong (to raise awareness regarding violence against women)
- Taught english to kindergarden students summer between junior and senior year
I plan on applying to Bowdoin, Vassar, Yale, Brown, Syracuse, Yale, University of North Carolina Chapel Hill and Colby.
I also plan to apply for financial aid.
Any advise, recommendations or tips?
Am I shooting too high with these colleges?
I do have safety schools but should I bother applying (for financial aid too) to so many of those selective colleges mentioned above?
Are my extra curricular activities too spread out? CAN they be too spread out?
