I am a Junior in high school, and I have very few EC’s. I have joined Interact club and another club at my high school this year, so I can put something on my college application, however, I don’t feel like this is enough. My Gpa is 3.96 Unweighted and 3.84 weighted on 4.0 scale and I am aiming for 1400 on the SAT. Do I have any chances of getting any scholarships?
Well…do the best yo7 can on that SAT, and you might want to try the ACT as well.
Once you have those scores, it will be easier to point you in the direction of scholarships.
Also, what state do you reside in?
If your GPA weighted is LOWER than unweighted, this implies a less than challenging courseload…in other words…no APs and courses that are mid level courses, or possibly remedial…lower than honors or regular curriculum. Is that what you are taking?
Are you sure about the weighted vs unweighted GPA.
I meant to say that my Weighted Gpa is 3.96 and my unweighted Gpa is 3.84. I am confident that I can raise my weighted to 4.1 and my unweighted to 3.9 by the end of Junior Year. The state that I reside in is Texas.
Look at UT Dallas…they used to have great merit scholarships. Your SAT will need to be a great one.
Are you in the top 6% of your graduating class? Are you an auto admit to UT-A?
unfortunately no our school is very competitive. Would 1500 on the sat be good enough
1500 would be a good score. How much can your family pay per year?
About 3000-4000$ a semester
Well…if you add your Direct Loan and summer earnings to what your parents can give, you will be very close to having room and board covered at some places.
Look at the University of Alabama scholarships. See what it takes to get a full tuition scholarship award.
I Was Planning to stay at home and commute to college so room and board is not a priority expense for me. What about scholarships to schools in Texas.
What colleges are within commuting distance of your home?
UTA, UTD, and UNT Primairly thinking about those 3
If you are looking at UNT, UTD & UTA then Baylor and TCU should be on your list as well. Both solid schools and amazing school spirit as well as good job connections in Texas. They offer generous financial aid and great merit scholarships.

If your family is middle class, Rice has extremely generous financial aid, if somehow you can get accepted to the college.
University of Houston, Texas Tech and A&M too have merit scholarships.
@CupCakeMuffins are Baylor and TCU within commuting distance for this student who is looking at the Dallas and Austin schools?
Yup. If he can commute to Austin and Dallas schools then Baylor & TCU are very doable.
What is your rank?
Our School Doesn’t rank.
So you won’t be auto admit to UT Austin. But for sure there wouldn’t be any scholarships there for your GPA and 1400 expected SAT.
It seems that I read almost every high school in Texas is competitive.
University of North Texas, UNT, has annual tuition and fees only of under $9000 a year. With the $5500 Direct Loan, and $4000 annually from parents…and a student job, this should be affordable if the student commutes, and parents are willing to help with commuting costs (car costs).
UNT is not as competitive as UTA, or A and M, for example.
And your parents will pay $6k per year? How much can you earn/save each year to put towards college costs?
What is your major and career goal?
Did you take the PSAT last month? How do you think you did?
You can commute to all of those schools? How far is each one from your home, in miles? Aren’t Austin and Dallas about 200 miles apart? I don’t see how all of these schools are commutable.
What is the distance from your home to each of these schools?
If you’re planning on driving 45-60mins to class, that’s a bad idea.
UTA is lousy with merit. UTD has good merit, look at their website for req’ts. Have you looked at UNT’s scholarship page?
I think he means UT Arlington by UTA not UT Austin, people often confuse two with each other. It seems he is from Dallas area not our Austin area.
In that case, he has chance to get some merit scholarship and it’s easier to get into UTA, UTD and UNT compared to UT Austin. If he is in DFW area then Austin College (closer to Dallas then Austin), Texas Women’s University (accepts men too) and University at Dallas should be commutable options from there.
SMU is there, would give partial merit but still expensive without need based aid. Baylor and TCU would be long commutes but i’ve heard from Dallas area parents that some do that by tailoring classes to only commute 3 days.
If you need merit money and want to commute than you’ll have to compromise on quality of college.
