Am I Overly Optimistic with my chances?

<p>Since UF and FSU are the cheapest options for me I’m worried if I don’t make it in I’ll be stuck in a pile of debt paying for a safety school out of state. I feel like I have a good chance at these school’s but some say I’m overly optimistic. What would you guys say FSU and UF are to me… Match or Reach? </p>

<p>UW GPA : 3.6</p>

<p>UF WGPA : 3.977 or 4.0 (Depending on what I make on my exam this week)</p>

<p>FSU WGPA: 3.78 or 3.8 (Directly off transcript) </p>

<p>Test Scores: 25 ACT , 1700 SAT (retaking this weekend)</p>

<p>Hooks (if any) : URM and from small rural town out of state. <em>First from high school to apply</em> First Gen.</p>

<p>-By the way, you may want to consider applying to UCF or FIT, those are good safety colleges as you may have a better chance of getting in to those. I’m pretty sure that you will get into FSU though. :)</p>

<p>If your SAT and ACT scores reach like 28/1850 + range you should be 100% in at FSU and like 75% if not more at UF. </p>

<p>FSU is a match, while UF is a match/high match. </p>

<p>As safeties, you should also think about applying to UCF, USF, UNF, etc. These schools have solid Bio programs, and will likely award you a merit scholarship (free money!). </p>

<p>Florida has very low in-state tuition, so even if you can’t get into FSU/UF, these schools could work for you. It’s not that uncommon for students to decline FSU/UF and enroll in another in-state university, due to the merit aid. These schools also use rolling admissions, so you can get accepted and offered merit, before the end of November. It’s nice having some acceptances in hand, while you wait on FSU and UF.</p>

<p>Does it help that my CR+M score is 1170 because I hear that colleges value those two sections to more weight than the writing?</p>

<p>FSU is a match, UF is a high match. Your CR+M score might help, but in any case, I’d suggest retaking it.</p>

<p>I think FSU is a high match with UF being a low reach but if you can slightly improve your SAT scores then you should be fine especially since you are in state</p>

<p>Well my friends brother got in last year with similar stats to yours (except a 1740 on SAT) but there’s always room for improvement :D</p>

I got into…

Penn State - Main Campus (Chemical Engineering) + no scholarships
Florida State - (Chemical Engineering) + 1k a year scholarship with IS tuition
University of Iowa (Chemical Engineering) + Full OOS tuition Grant + 5k a year scholarship

I went 3 for 3 :smile:

Thank you. and Yep! Penn state is 45k a year and it would break the bank. (nice knowing I got in tho!)

Iowa’s engineering program is much smaller and a bit better academically than FSU’s FAMU-FSU engineering thing they have going on so I’ll be in Iowa City!

not to mention its cheaper and will leave me with little to no debt!

Did you apply to the Honors College (or did they invite you already)? Did you put down your deposit? Especially important to get “good” housing.
If possible, try to have honors housing (if in the honors college), otherwise, try to get a Living Learning Community - it helps in making close friends with common interests.

I love the conclusion to your story: originally you were worried about getting into FSU and only applied to Iowa as a safety (which you worried would be too expensive)… and it turns out that it’s not only less expensive, but also more interesting to you!

Have you visited Iowa? Done an overnight?

I’m a big proponent of going away and discovering another part of the country while in college, if one receives a scholarship to do so. It’s the only time when one is not tied up to a place (job, couple/kids, obligations) AND will have a financial advantage in moving.

I applied for housing and put down my deposit back in November when I was accepted. I didn’t apply for Honors but they send you an invitation if you meet the requirements and I dont. :frowning:

The living learning community I picked was PIE (People in Engineering) and they do a lot of engineering competitions and tours of local engineering companies and cool stuff like that http://housing.uiowa.edu/living-learning-communities/people-engineering

I haven’t visited Iowa but I really want to. From what I hear its an amazing college town with lots of culture. The American Institute for Economic Research ranks iowa city #4 for best college towns :wink: . Over dinner with my friend’s parents, who are both doctors, I found out they actually met in Iowa City and they’re Iowa Alumni! They had nothing but good things to say about the university and said it was the best four years of their life!

As you can see I’m pretty sold on going there. :smile:
