I am currently a sophomore at a small STEM highschool in WA. I can’t access AP classes until next year and am not sure if there are any. My GPA currently is 3.3 and I got a 1130 on my PSAT and planning to retake PSAT and do SAT soon.
For extracurriculars I am in Key Club and looking for an officer position, I am vice president of International Language and Culture Club and will be president, and I am also in Fine Arts Club.
I am also studying for the SAT.
What would you reccomend me doing in the next few years to increase my chances of admittance?
I think you know the answer. You will need to bring your GPA up a ton and your SAT score up as well. You are also out of state which makes admission even more competative. You have time though so its possible. I would assume for OOS you should have at least a 4.0 UC gpa to be considered competative.
As an OOS student, you will need to bring your GPA to at least a 4.0 weighted if not higher. Your SAT will also have to be a lot higher than the average for accepted students. You should also look into doing some more activities if you can, like volunteering. Make sure you do something productive over the summers you have before senior year. You should also consider the financial cost of attending a UC as an OOS student because there is little to no need-based aid.
Additionally I am looking into voluteering more but it is difficult to volunteer afterschool due to the school itself being farther away from my home and it takes an hour thirty minute bus ride average to get home.
I forgot to add that my school operates in trimesters and I will end up with more credits than the average student. My school, as it is a STEM school, forces it’s students into more engineering classes and does not offer any sports or much other things in the way of extracurriculars unless you want to join clubs.
I am also seeking more leadership roles in student senate next year.
While it may be difficult at your high school to get a 4.0, those that do are the ones who have a chance at admission to UC Berkeley and other elite schools.
“For my school it’s actually very difficult for anyone to get a 4 gpa average and most people, even freshman have a grade around 3”
This is why most people do no get into UC Berkeley…
