Am I safe?

Hi,

I’m a verbally committed volleyball player to a top D3 academic school with a very low yield rate. Not sure if I should say the school or not so I’ll just say it’s definitely ranked top 10 in all college rankings. The coach asked me to submit my application asap, and I REALLY want to (I’ve finished all the essay and have already submitted the Universal app) but I’m waiting on one more supplemental teacher rec from my HS vball coach (she says she’ll try to have it by this weekend) before I submit the school’s supplement app.

(This school is D3 and not Ivy League, but it’s always been my top choice and I would give the world to be there.)

The coach also said once i submit my app, I should get a Likely Letter. If I’m applying EA and submit it by this weekend (no ED for this school), when can I expect a Likely Letter and am I even good enough to get one? The coaches told me they’re not worried about me getting in on my own, so I interpreted that as they aren’t using one of their slots for me. (They have a limited # of slots, and are probably saving them for stronger athletes who need more of a push, I’m guessing.)

My stats:
Class of 2015, Female, Asian, plan to major in Computer Science (it’s not what the school is famous for but their program’s still very good)

Unweighted GPA - 3.96
Weighted GPA - 4.65
School does not do rankings
ACT - 34 Composite (36 Science, 35 Math, 31 Reading, 34 English)
SAT Subject Math II - 780
SAT Chemistry - 770

AP classes before Sr. year -

Volunteer/EC:

 • Work every Sunday at nursing home
 • Work over the summer at volleyball camps as coaching assistant
 • Since April 2013, I’ve had a paid internship at a company that provides Tech Support
 • Graphic Design Club (VP), National Honors Society, Science National Honors Society
 • Part of school’s AOIT pathway (Information Technology)
 • Have played volleyball since I was 9 - PrepFrosh Top Freshman Honorable Mention, All - Met Honorable Mention, many honors and recognition in Newspaper, played in High Performance A2 and A3 (National)

I expect my academic letters to be above average, but the supplement one from my coach should be very good since I’ve known her since I was 7 and was team captain as a Freshman.

Compared to the school I’m committed to, I’m pretty sure I would not stand out without the verbal commitment, but I’m not sure if my coach used a slot for me. She said I can “expect a Likely Letter after submitting since I’m committed.” Do you think I will receive it based on my situation?

This is very strong language from the coach. I would interpret this as “safe” to the extent that you can trust the coach ( or any person’s word). You have great stats and your EC commitment to volleyball is amazing. Get your stuff in and keep getting applications prepared for other schools in case this falls through. As the cliche says, hope for the best and prepare for the worst. I predict your stress will be over soon!

I think I know the school of which you are speaking. Likely Letters are typically the stuff of Ivy League recruiting, but I have heard of them being used at that school on the South Side. If the coach is supporting your (very strong) ap and you get the LL - you’re golden. If he’s not supporting you but counting on you to get in on your own - I don’t think a LL would be offered. In other words, the fact that he said you should expect a LL after submitting your ap tells me that he ** is ** supporting your EA ap. Maybe a call to the coach for clarification is in order. Good luck!

Thank you for your replies! I haven’t been able to get in touch with the coach recently (only the assistant coach) who told me the head coach has been very busy in season this week. The Asst. said she is “pretty sure” that I was on the list of 2015 recruits the coach gave to admissions, so fingers crossed!! :)

Unweighted GPA - 3.96
Weighted GPA - 4.65
ACT - 34
SAT Subject Math II - 780
SAT Chemistry - 770

And a ton of AP courses to boot!

You look really solid even if you don’t get the Likely letter!

We all know the university of which you speak, and it truly is a fantastic school. You have a great record, and even though there are no guarantees of admission in Division 3, you really are in as good a position as you could possibly be. Congrats.
