Am I the only CC-er..... dealing with Hurricane Isaac?

…dealing with (soon to be) Hurricane Isaac???

I got to New Orleans last Friday - after getting DS#1 settled into his apt at Penn State - and lo and behold - there was a hurricane a-comin’!

Of course, I was “supposed” to fly to Houston this Thursday and fly back overseas on Friday morning, but that’s not happening now. :(

I have spent the past 2 days with my mom and brother - gassing up the cars, buying supplies, prepping the house and yard, etc. Not fun, but we’re used to it. Also have been worried about DS#2 up at LSU - but he’s better off there than here.

Hoping anyone who is in Isaac’s way stays safe!!!

Nope, me, too. Brought son back to school last weekend and got doctor appts over with and was ready to go back to work and finally make some money!

Booked all this week with clients, and lo and behold, here is the storm.

Staying in place, eating all the frozen dinners, in preparation for power outages.

In fact, I was supposed to be driving over to Houston for Labor Day to check on mom in nursing home, but think I’ll be cleaning out my yard and Grandpa’s Biloxi yard as well!

So glad son is up at school as well. Some kids are at Midwest schools on the quarter system and have unfortunately not been sent out of harm’s way yet. Must remember this when grad school apps come around next year.

LOL!!! I was wondering if you would see this!!!

Stay safe!!!

You, too, Grcxx3. Hope you and your family are safe, and glad you have both boys settled in college!

Me too, I am in Houston but the family, and everyone else I want to see during labor day is in Louisiana. I was planning to drive there on Thursday to enjoy a long weekend. Hopefully Isaac will not ruin my plans…

My dad is hoping he will not lose the rest of his roof, he lost a good bit to Gustav in 2008.

^^^I know. I was like, what I thinking, making vacation plans for Labor Day? It’s usually a vacation day, but the kind we like. The fun part is sleeping in the car with all the cats because no boarding places are open over the holiday.

Husband’s old boss is on a cruise. No one could believe he actually booked a cruise in the month of August. I mean, what was he thinking?

I understand what you mean I also have 3 cats, but so far I have not had to stay in a car with them :)

As for your husband’s friend? I bet the cruise rate was dirt cheap! I booked a cruise for December, and now I get their promotions via email. The prices are very low right now (for obvious reasons).

I seem to be a hurricane magnet when it comes to vacations, I was vacationing in Destin when hurricane Dennis hit in July of 04, then some tropical storm in '09 I forget the name but it also hit Destin, in Pensacola when TS Stan hit in '11, and just recently was in Panama City when Debby formed right off the coast and hit that area.

I’m sure not, but the best of luck! Please stay safe!!!

FinanceGrad - hope everything is fine with your family. These things are never fun - but they do bring people together!!

We had just moved to NOLA when Andrew headed our way. We were clueless and were in line at Home Depot with laundry room cabinets when everyone else in town was stocking up on plywood, tarps and tape. Steep learning curve.
All of you in the sights of this storm are in our thoughts. Stay safe.

dragonmom - definitely a tough time for newbies! I grew up here - so I am more than familiar with what has to be done. Don’t like it, but am used to it.

I remember Andrew. We had been in PA visiting DH’s family and really paid no attention to the news. We got back to NO and - WOW! We ended up staying at my parents house (at that time uptown) because I didn’t want us to be on our own with a baby!

We’re thinking about you, New Orleaners! Katrina was an unbelievable tragedy and to think you’re facing this again !!! Please be safe - and if you can, let us know how you’re doing.

We dodged a bullet in Tampa with Isaac skirting west of us. Hope the storm weakens and folks along upper gulf near New Orleans area suffer only minor inconveniences.

What Tampa and Florida southwest gulfcoast area don’t ever want to experience is another hurricane like the 1935 Labor Day category 5 hurricane that passed along just off the S.W. Fl. coast. Today’s 10 million people in that region wouldn’t mix well with 15 ft tidal surges, and 185 mph winds!
lizard - I remember reading about that storm. Let’s just hope that this passes thru with minimal damage to NO and the Gulf Coast - and takes all the rain up the river to people who really need it.

Everyone stay safe!

^ I’d bet the past Florida hurricane you’re thinking about was actually the 1928 Lake Okeechobee category 5 storm where over 2500 souls drowned when the lake spilled over…not the 1935 hurricane. According to attached link at least 1600 people were buried in a mass grave. Florida was sparsely populated back then and the little towns around the lake were farming settlements.
Has anyone seen any of the coverage by the weather channel of the hurricanes? I think it gets worse every year. They cover it like they are doing the super bowl, and the hurricane is the favored team.

Also, their attempts to say New Orleans with a fake a southern accent make me cringe :(.

^^^
My mother and I were just saying the same thing!

Stay safe down there! Just saw a news story that showed video of people frolicking in the huge waves of the Gulf and clearly having trouble with the undercurrent. Amazing how stupid some people can be.

Yep, news film showing people wading up to their knees as the waves crash over the seawall at Lake Pontchartrain. The police were not amused and reporters were chastised for even showing that coverage.

Looting rampant during Katrina, and nobody is playing this time around. Already several arrests, even shootings, before the storm has even hit.

Getting a lot of wind, and have eaten every Lean Cuisine in the freezer.

Cats are so happy mommy and daddy are home. Even the old ladies have come out to cuddle at my feet.

Thoughts with all of you going through Isaac. As others said, please try to keep us posted.
