It is less than two weeks to my SAT Reasoning test, and I have been doing some preparing (seems a LOT to me), and my score is not very good. So I have been looking around the site, and I noticed a “What are my chances?” forum. I click on it, then click on “Chance me for Ivy League” (or some kind of thread like that).

It just so happens that Ivy League schools are the universities that my parents want me to apply for. So I was like, meh I’ll give it a try. But after looking at the threads in the “What are my chances?” forum, I am not sure if I am just stupid, or wasting my time.

I knew you had to be pretty good to get into the Ivy League schools, but I look at some of these peoples’ extracurriculars and awards, and in my opinion they were 100% Ivy League material. These people had like ranked 5th in the world for blah blah and had perfect SAT scores and volunteered 1 mil hours and stuff like that. Then I scroll down the page, and everyone else is just like, “this person might get in,” or “decent could be better.”

I really do not know if I should even consider trying. Like right now I do not have any volunteer hours, have not written the SAT, and have not won any awards for my extracurriculars. By the end of summer, I will have written the SAT Reasoning and some subjects, gotten some volunteer hours, but no extracurricular awards.

I kinda suck donkey balls. And I am kind of depressed. But the good thing is that I live in Canada, so if I am a failure, I can still get into some decent schools.

So right now I need some advice. Lets say I get a 2100 on the reasoning. According to this site I am in the score range, but i am not so sure. Should I continue studying and take the subject tests, or just stop?

The “What are my Chances” board is a joke. Those people are merely speculating on the admissions process… they are students themselves…
What are your scores right now? Because for most ivies and top schools, a 2100 is just as good, and you’ll have to have some other hooks in ur app.
You can always try applying to the ivies but let’s be realistic, you should also apply to a few matches/safeties.

I have not written my SAT Reasoning test yet, but my practice test scores are not that great. So what do you mean by “hooks in ur app?”

If I cannot get into a Ivy League, I might as well just not take the SAT. I could just go to University of Toronto…are there other schools in the US that are better than UT, besides Ivies, Standford, and MIT?

My Indian (not Native-American) got into Harvard, MIT, Tufts with 2000 his second try. My other friend (Chinese), got into MIT with like 1850 or something.

Honestly, if you don’t have major hooks, not to burst your bubble, you’re unlikely to get into the ivy quality schools even if you have super high SAT scores.
How’s your GPA by the way?
You gotta weigh the chance of getting in vs reject before you start spending time studying because your goal is ivy and the like~

man, I was desperate as you are. I have not very great SATs and I was rejected. Now I’m gonna learn hard and with my athletic skills I hope I will get in the next time. I am sure you have something in your life, your passion or something which is special, everyone does! Concentrate on it, bring it to the highest level possible and challenge yourself!

Anyways, Thanks for the help everyone. I do not know how to calculate GPA, but my grade 10 percents were all above 90, with the lowest being English (91%). I got #1 aggregate in my grade level. Right now I am in grade 11; agerage of 98 last semester, and this semester my lowest persent is 94%, but it is going to go up.

So yea, I have two main extracurriculars: violin and karate. I also like cubing (Rubik’s cube). i have not really competed in any serious tournaments, so I do not really have any awards.

I think I am going to start volunteering soon.

So what is the main reason these people got into such awesome universities?

No one can tell you what the main reason is that these people got into the Ivy League. Sometimes when I see people putting the race of the students I assume that they assume their friends got in because they are an underrepresented minority. And while I won’t argue the idea that underrepresented minorities may be able to gain admissions to top schools with slightly lower SAT scores (because overall, they tend to score lower on the SAT, and schools realize that there is more to a person than their SAT score), people forget to report the applicant’s ENTIRE application.

In any case, you also should realize that your SAT score does not make the entirety of your application. Shoot for a good score (aim for a 1900 or higher, I would think – I think to be solid a 2000+ would be good but you have to work your way up) but make the rest of your application shine! Also, there are plenty of other good colleges in the U.S. besides the Ivy League – from small liberal arts colleges to great publics to those “A Schools for B+ Students”. There are over 3,000 colleges in the U.S.!

I think it’s nice that these other guys are giving you motivation and all that crap, but I agree with Ren. If you want to try the SAT, try it. But don’t count on getting into HYPS or anything like that. You need to be realistic here: if you don’t have anything particularly special that colleges would want, it’s probably a better idea to move on.

If you don’t consider yourself an elitist prick/genius its probably best to avoid the chances form. Actually, its probably best to avoid the chances forum all together, as the vast majority of people have no clue what they are talking about. Also consider this is the internet, noone stretches the truth(scores etc)
