Dave seems to be managing pain very well - I wonder how much that boot helps…

I can’t believe the stupid decisions the guy was making last night with first giving up on the first roadblock, not using the express pass when there were no teams still doing the volcanic stream dirt task like he said he would and then not using it at the surf challenge like he said he would. And the girl just passively went along with whatever he said with seemingly offering no input herself. I wonder if he just assumed he’d be able to beat mulletman once he saw him doing the task? I wonder why she didn’t speak up and assert herself?

His reaction to losing the task, both while still doing the task, which seemed to take hours since he was still doing it after dark, and when he was speaking to Phil was off the wall. His attitude of ‘that’s alright’ was a little overboard and his comment stated seriously that he didn’t need a million dollars anyway was bizarre as well given that he’s on the race.

Given the way they behaved, that couple deserved to go.

It’s cool the dad/son won another task even though he has the impediment of the boot and crutches. It seems that at some point a task will do him in though but by continuing they got to see a different country and earn $10K.

A relative of mine snapped her Achilles tendon and wore a boot for a long time. The boot stabilized the foot so the joint basically didn’t move which means no movement in the tendon area. She was in no pain from it after it snapped. Based on that, I doubt the dad is in any pain from the injury although it could be painful to use the crutch the way he is and hobbling along with the boot and the straight leg could be using different muscles.

I was thinking the guy was battling either extremely low blood sugar or dehydration. He was acting like he was inebriated. I haven’t read or seen any post show interviews but I really wonder if there something physical going on with him.

Here’s a quick interview with the eliminated team - I’m not buying their answers!!

ELIMINATION INTERVIEW: JESSICA AND JOHN
POSTED ON MAR 11, 2013 02:20PM

Read what Jessica and John had to say about their time in the game in this elimination interview! Find out why they didn’t use their express pass, what their best memory from the Race is and more!

Karla K: Why didn’t you use your express pass?
John: Jessica and I thoughts that the Derby girls were behind us.
Jessica: When we got to the roadblock there was an extea clue in the box, which reconfirmed the thought that there would be another team behind us. We also didn’t know what decision Dave & Connor had made, if they would continue or go home.

Jen N: What’s your best memory of the race?
John: Skydiving out of the helicopter in Bora Bora. It was thrilling & beautiful.
Jessica: The jetskies in Bora Bora and the jet boat ride in New Zealand.

Rex B: Did you assume it would be a non-elimination leg of the Race?
Jessica: We didn’t assume but of course everyone hopes that when they are last to check in.

Gary P: How does your teammate feel about your decision to not use the express pass?
Jessica: Throughout the whole race we discussed why or why not to use it. We thought the Derby girls were behind us so we decided together not to use it.

Brian S: John, you seemed like you didn’t really care that you were eliminated? Why?
John: I did care that we were eliminated. What I intended to get across when I said “I don’t need a million dollars” didn’t get across. What I intended when I said that was based around the word “Need.” What I was trying to note was that everyone in the race - none of us “need” the million dollars. We wanted it, we were competing hard for it. After running around the world and having your view expanded it makes it more clear than ever how fortunate all of us are.

Jeffrey C: What was the hardest task you encountered during the entire race?
John: Building the fruit offering.
Jessica: It was long and tedious and we weren’t sure how to build it correctly. We kept getting denied and they couldn’t tell us what we were doing wrong.

Darn it! This season is really screwed up!!

I sure hope AR let’s the dad and son come back on an all-star season… :(

No one really standing out for me now…

Okay, really??? You’re in 2nd place, you can u-turn almost any other team, and instead of picking one of the strongest teams in the race, you pick the weakest? WHAT were they thinking??? Yeah, right . . . they weren’t thinking. Seems to be a lot of that going around . . . :(

Bye bye Dad & Son. They weren’t my favorites but they sure had spunk!

Last night’s episode was up & down for me. I kind of like the Asian girls, haven’t seen much of the Roller Derby Moms (and they were a favorite of mine for an episode or two), and I do like the cute YouTube Geeks (I can’t explain it, but I like their quirky nature and energy).

I had no idea that Hanoi was so modern. (and laughed my butt off at the patriotic song and dance)

Actually, this is considered to be a reasonable strategy. A very strong team may be able to handle the u-turn and still remain in the race, in which case you’ve gained nothing by using the u-turn. If you think of the main goal of each leg as simply NOT finishing last, then it makes sense to assure that another team will finish last by u-turning a weak team. In that case, you’ve used the u-turn to virtually guarantee that you won’t get eliminated in that round. Another element to keep in mind is that in many cases the teams aren’t sure where the other teams are. There have been instances of a team u-turning a team that’s ahead of them, which has no effect. So u-turning a weak team is a pretty safe and useful strategy. (Can you tell I’m quite addicted to this show?)

Apparently I’m not the only one who wasn’t happy with the last episode regarding the events they had in Vietnam. I’m referring to getting the clue at a downed B-52 location that apparently the Vietnamese celebrate and the presentation by a bunch of Vietnamese singers where they sing of the glorious communist Vietnam.

I agree with the following article that it was a very poor decision and one that was offensive to people in this country - especially those who served in the war with Vietnam or had family/friends who served there.

I have friends who have spent a lot of time in Vietnam and I’ve seen photographs they’ve taken of the wreckage of this B-52. I have a few family members and friends who served in Vietnam and I can’t imagine that this would offend any of them. Two of them have travelled back to Vietnam three or four times with their families. It’s a part of history. With the devastation caused by the U.S. bombing of Hanoi, I thought it was an interesting segment showing a bit of how the city has recovered from those days.

I don’t think it was a mistake for TAR to stop there any more than I think it was a mistake a few seasons ago to stop at Hiroshima.

I am glad to see this mentioned. I don’t have an opinion (yet), and I was only half paying attention during those parts of the show. I didn’t take it as a promotion or glorification of Vietnam, however. Looking forward to any comments here and I am planning to ask my Vietnam vet uncle his opinion, who will influence me quite a bit.

A few seasons ago I questioned the visit to the Hanoi Hilton, where I am sure torture of American POW’s was the norm.

My D watched the song as an educational lesson. I’m sure they have been to many sites which are monuments to battles, crimes, etc, over the years. At some point it becomes history, perhaps not to those who lived through it. Not surprised as to the source of the article linked though.

I didn’t really consider that it would offend. All of us were too busy laughing at the lyrics!

I had no problem with the song part at all. It’s representative of their culture and political system. I imagine if the Vietnamese produced a show about America they might show the national anthem being sung at a baseball game. Perhaps they could have added some solemnity to the shot of the B-52 but the overall theme seemed to be what many people see when they travel to Vietnam, that it has become quite modernized.

“That apparently the Vietnamese celebrate”??? It’s a memorial. I don’t know of any culture where a memorial would be the focus of celebration.

I’m a Vietnam Era Vet who had friends get killed in Vietnam. I see nothing wrong with the location or the song. Perhaps the producers cut some of the footage?

WELL…The Amazing Race just issued an apology at the beginning of tonight’s episode for the B52 scene and song lyrics used for the challenges in Hanoi.

I was glad to see the apology…

This season has had some of the most “amazing” destinations. Some seasons are just so so - but so far this season, I’ve wanted to go to all of them.

The route to Botswana was sure a lengthy plane ride - I’ll bet the elapsed time was probably close to 24 hours…

I thought the plane ride looked at least 24 hours as well. I wonder if they got hotel rooms and can actually slept at some point?

I enjoyed last night. I have actually been to Maun, Botswana!
