If you have a student attending college out of state is it better, financially and logistically, to let them open a Amazon Prime student account paid for with a parent credit card, or would it be better to let them share a family Amazon Prime account (I’m not sure if it is even possible to share a family account with an out of state student.) Any advice is much appreciated.

We share a prime account as a family. D is out of state, and there’s no problem.

H has an Amazon Prime account as well and we share it with D, who is out of state in CA.

We use my daughter’s amazon student account-. However, the student account does not have the video access that a regular prime account has - so you need to consider whether you want that option or not when picking which way to go.

Be aware that sharing a student account is NOT a real option as it is not permitted. Amazon might cancel the account and not prorate the refund if established that parents (ab)used the benefits, which it has done.

If more family members than the student are planning to use the account, a full membership is the way to go.

Thanks for your input everyone.
@xiggi I knew it was verboten to share a student account, but I wasn’t sure if there was a problem with sharing a regular full price account with a student living part of the year out of state in college. If a family account can be shared in this way I think it would be the best way to go.

We share my family account. It made no sense to get her an account of her own, even at reduced cost, when it was just as easy to share. She’s several states away. We’ve always shared the amazon account anyway, as we all had Kindle readers and now all have Kindle Fire tablets. I get an email every time she orders anything so it’s not like she can rack up charges and me not know about it :)
