Amazon River

Has anybody been on the Amazon and which is the better place to go - Peru or Ecuador? Perhaps there is even a better place to see the river and other interesting sites? We’re planning on going there in July which may impact the best place to go.

I haven’t been but have you read the book about Teddy Roosevelt called The River of Doubt? Great book but it put me off of a trip down the Amazon.

No - I haven’t read it. I looked at a review on Amazon.com (coincidence). Unfortunately, most of the river isn’t quite like that description. There are packaged trips as it not 1912. Roosevelt’s trip sounds a lot more interesting and would have been something I preferred.

I have several friends who are serious birders and they did Amazon River trips in Peru. They all went with Mass Audubon on a tour that was geared toward birding and wildlife viewing. I think part of the trip was a cruise on the river and they also went to Machu PIcchu.

Only been to Peru not Ecuador and not on the river- a friend did and that was not pleasant for him- said he ate a lot of bugs and needed more shots or pills? I thought machu picchu was nice but years later we are still talking about reed island at lake titicac.

I may already have all the shots and pills I need - malaria, yellow fever, etc.

Friend did trip down the river in Ecuador. They were miserable. Super hot, even at night. Bugs were overwhelming. They bailed early.

You could look into Leticia, Colombia… it’s right on the Amazon where Colombia, Brazil, and Peru meet.

sounds a bit like our trip this summer - the tse tse flies were overwhelming and chased us in our jeep.

Pretty sad…I saw the thread title and thought…“Amazon sells something called a River??”

Sheesh. I’ve been doing too much Christmas shopping.

Ecuador has tributaries, but not the Amazon River itself.
