Amazon student

Hi all,

Maybe a dumb question, but does anyone know the benefits of Amazon Student over regular Amazon Prime? I have amazon prime, which my daughter will have access to, and I’ve been trying to figure out if something different is offered in the student version.

For instance, she can buy and sell books via my acct. But maybe there is a benefit via Amazon Student. Any thoughts appreciated…

Not sure how it is now, but when my kids signed up for Amazon Student there was a free trial period. After that, the cost to renew the membership was much less than the regular Amazon Prime. Since I don’t have a prime account of my own, it made sense for my kids to sign up at the cheaper price. I don’t think there is a benefit other than that.

Yes, there was a free trial for both students and educators. It goes away.

But honestly it might be worth it in the long run, that two-day shipping (which for us is sometimes one-day) is great.

The free trial is for 6-month. Then the cost is half of regular prime. Prime video is included but something in regular prime is missing (but I forgot what). The 2-day free prime shipping is standard.

Much cheaper. You can’t make multiple accounts on student like you can on standard but other than that I don’t know of any difference.

Prime is a life saver for me.

Student has the exact same benefits but is 1/2 the price. I had my son sign up as I had cancelled my membership when the price went up. I paid his membership and I use it.

^^^Agreed. Students get the same benefits at half the price.

I can say that Amazon Prime is fabulous at full or half price. Son even has water delivered to his dorm, all kinds of food - tea, coffee, it is a riot to see what he orders. There was some costume event where he needed a white tie and black top hat and bam - there it was in two days. That free shipping is fab and with several kids, we certainly get our $ worth!

Can we get things delivered both to the school and home address with one student Prime account?

^^ yes.

we have things delivered to multiple addresses and have used different methods of payment on the same account.

I thought the one difference was that student prime didn’t get streaming…for example, if you want to watch the Amazon show Transparent, you’d only be able to get it through prime (not student).

My Ds all had student prime and we just added credit cards and addresses to the account and used theirs. You just need to be extra careful to make sure that whoever is purchasing is using their own card and clicks the right mailing address…we’ve definitely had a few items arrive in the wrong place a few times over the years.

So for Amazon student, does the account email need to be the .edu email or do you just need that for sign up?
I’m just trying to understand if all the receipt confirmations etc go to the student email address or if you can put a Gmail account in.

The account email does need to be the .edu email. My d’s always got/get the confirmation emails which they found annoying so they turned off that function. I am not able to get a confirmation email directly but I can always log into the account and check the status/make sure the order went through, etc. Hasn’t ever been a problem.

Thx all. It seems like I should just stick with my prime acct and have her use it.

I couldn’t live without amazon. I started the subscribe and save for toilet paper and paper towels. And dog food! Holy moly! The savings we get by having a big bag of Wellness dog food sent monthly. I was paying about $18 a week and now it’s about $27 a month. Same brand. Delivered.

There have been many discussions on this. The student account is more limited, and is NOT made for sharing, unless one decides to ABUSE the system. Yes, Amazon has not been strict about sharing addresses (which they should in my opinion) but it opens the account to a possible suspension.

The benefits of a full account that can be shared are tremendous and a formidable value. It makes sense for a student to get an account if his or her family does NOT have a Prime account. The other variable such as parents closing their account to illegally use a student account … is less than honorable. Ultimately, everyone will a full account will pay for the freeloaders.

By the way, there are a number of cheaper Amazon possibilities, including business accounts that restrict the free 2-day shipping to a minimum of 49 dollars.

As a counter to @xiggi, I will note that community colleges do not all host .edu domains for their students (they suggest students sign up for gmail or yahoo, or whatever, accounts). Those students then have a very difficult time signing up for the student account, and the student ultimately pays for the “full” account price.
