by being good at math

The AMC is the first of a series of exams used to select the US team for the International Math Olympiad. MIT, Cal Tech, and maybe Chicago have a place for your AMC score on the application, but it is self reported, so if you take it and don’t like your score, it is ok. There is no official reporting of AMC’s for low scores, but the top/qualifying scores are published, so don’t try to fake it.

Scoring over 100 on the AMC 12 or 120 on the AMC 10, out of 150, qualifies you for the American Inviational Mathematics Exam (AIME). These scores are used to invite people for the USA Math Olympiad and (new this year) the Jr USAMO for 10th and under.

The top 12 on the USAMO are invited to DC for another round of tests, and the top 6 are the US team. The top ones do win scholarship money, but they also have their pick of top schools. Even decent USAMO people are recruited to schools’ math departments to compete on their Putman teams.

so i would be taking the AMC 10 since im a sophmore?

Yes. Your amc 10 score + AIME score will determine if you are qualified for USAMO, provided that you get over 120 on amc 10. You have about 20 points advantage by taking amc10. The passing score or the USAMO index is about 210 -220. Recent passing scores for amc 12 A is around 97, instead of 100.

About 6000 students each year qualify for AIME, 500 students for USAMO. About ten schools including HPSM are asking for the scores. Most of those with high USAMO index ended up with HPSM, especially with MIT.

Note that sophomores can take the AMC-12 and/or the AMC-10. AMC-10 is for 10th graders and below. AMC-12 is for 12th graders and below.

You can’t take both on the same day.

A 10th grader could take
- the AMC-12 on the A day and the AMC-10 on the B day
- the AMC-10 on the A day and the AMC-12 on the B day
- the AMC-10 on both the A day and the B day
- the AMC-12 on both the A day and the B day
- just one exam (either one) on either day

If you are new to the AMC, I would recommend the AMC-10.

You will need to register for the AMC (10 or 12) - if you can’t get your high school to offer it , then you may need to find some way to get to a local test center. Test dates are Feb 9 and 24, so you should talk to your math teacher ASAP.
