Hello! I was hoping past or present students from AU, Davidson, or Lehigh could give a review. I’m a field hockey recruit, and I have the option of committing definitely to Davidson or Lehigh and potentially American. But I don’t know which to choose because I like all of them!
I am not a student at any of these schools, but my old soccer coach is now the head coach at American. He was recruiting me to play there and it was unbelievable. The only thing I did not like was that it was in the city. I am currently a d1 athlete at a school in the Atlantic 10, so I have travelled to Davidson for games. Other than the quality academics and cool Steph Curry shrines, I am not sure that I would have liked to go to this school. I am from Philadelphia, and I have many friends that go to Lehigh. I have visited and been recruited to go to Lehigh and I truly believe if I had the grades to get in academically I would have chosen it over any other school in the world. It is the most amazing school I have ever been to. Lehigh all the way from me.
These are all good schools, and they would probably all get good reviews from most of their current students. You might get more helpful responses if you provided a bit more information about yourself, such as your specific interests, likes, or dislikes. Do you like big cities or small towns? Engineering or humanities? Close to home, or far away? Stuff like that.
All we know about you is that you play field hockey. Of these three schools, American probably has the strongest field hockey program, but you probably already knew that.
I want to major in business, but I know at Davidson I would have to study Econ. I really don’t care how far it is from home. When I first started looking at colleges, I wanted to be in a city, but now if it’s within an hour drive to a city that’s fine with me. I guess my real question how does the student life compare at each? @Corbett
I did not attend any of these schools, but since there are no other replies, will offer my impressions about student life:
Lehigh is known as a party school, with a “work hard, play hard” culture. Some contributing factors to this probably include a popular Greek system; a lack of off-campus entertainment options; a relatively high percentage (56%) of male students; and a large number of upperclassmen living in nearby off-campus row houses without university supervision.
Davidson also has a “work hard, play hard” reputation, but I suspect that the partying is probably muted compared to Lehigh. Davidson is a liberal arts college, which means that the number of students is small, they nearly all live in university housing, and they are generally subject to greater university oversight. Davidson is one of the smallest schools to play sports at the NCAA D1 level, and so the levels of athletic interest and participation are unusually high.
American is not noted as a party school. Unlike the other two, it is located within a major city, and there are plenty of other things do. Also, AU’s enrollment is strongly slanted towards women (62%), and the school also appeals to gay men; both groups are considered less likely to party aggressively. Of the three schools, AU probably has the lowest levels of athletic interest and participation; for example, it is the only one without a football team.
