American dentist kills iconic African lion for sport

I will never understand the appeal of mounting a head on one’s wall. I live in major hunting area and there are deer heads all over the place (homes, restaurants, etc). Makes me sick. I don’t want walls looking at me!

I actually have no problem with hunting in general and I wish more people would hunt for their own food. It would give people a better appreciation of what they throw away when they throw away meat as well as it being (generally) more humane.

I still think he should be fed to the lions (or wolves, or eagles…)

Oh, he knew. This POS intentionally lured the lion out of the protected park, an easy thing to do since Cecil was apparently quite friendly with humans.

This isn’t the first time this piece of garbage has done this:

This story is sickening. I guess he thinks he’s a big man and that this kill would impress people. I think he’s compensating.

All I can think of is that beautiful animal believing and trusting in humans, then being sadistically sabotaged, attacked and cut to pieces.

This is not a sport. This is not hunting to eat or survive. This is murder.

I read a quote, can’t remember attribution:

“Hunting is not a sport. In a sport, both sides know they’re in the game.”

Disgusting human being. Something tells me that he has some serious psychological issues… hence the need to feed his inner insecurities with “acts of courage.” Absolutely disgusting.

Someone needs to taxidermy his balls . . . if he has any

As audiophile pointed out, Palmer’s dentistry practice is being trashed with negative comments on Yelp. Not sure if Yelp is deleting comments or allowing them…but there is a lot of response to this.

The game park officials noted that Cecil is accustomed to humans — he has been a star attraction at the park for years — and would not have been wary at all. So much for sportsmanship in this version of hunting.

And what’s up with hunting with a bow and arrow? Inflict maximum pain for a lengthy period of time on your quarry…what is that supposed to prove?

I understand hunting various game and using your kill for food, if you make your shots quick and clean. I think using a bow and arrow is unnecessarily cruel. These aren’t Disney robot animals…they feel pain.

Yelp is trying hard to delete those negative comments, and the folks just keep reposting them, apparently. Good.

Hm… lures and kills most popular lion in Zimbabwe… seems “responsible” all right.

There is something fundamentally twisted in the personality of someone who kills animals for sport, IMO. It shows a complete lack of empathy and compassion. He probably tortured small animals as a child, too. I wouldn’t be at all surprised to find out that he’d prefer hunting human beings. But he knows he’d have a much harder time getting away with doing that. This man is disturbing.

I detest all forms of killing endangered wildlife. Some people whose house I visited had an entire elephant tusk carved. Sickening.

In our area, people want to kill the coyotes because they eat dogs and cats. Coyotes are not endangered, but the coyotes were here first. Bring your cats and little dogs inside.

Wildlife first.

Everyone call PETA!

Seriously though, who would pay 55K and risk their lives to kill a lion. I thought dentists were suppose to be smart, I bet he cheated in dental school…
I bet he is one of those dentists we hear on the news that secretly hurt kids on purpose and pull their teeth out for no reason!

I’m sure that I could never trust someone like that to treat me …

My dad grew up in the '30’s and hunting and fishing put food on the table. DH and I fished as grad students and we’re grateful for fresh trout dinners.
Killing for a trophy?
if he were in my community I would be organizing action so that everyone in his practice saw photos of the tame animal he slaughtered.

What a coward. Luring a magnificent creature out of it’s natural habitat and then slaughtering it. This guy has serious inadequacy issues.

Were, not we’re. Darn autocorrect.

@dragonmom – I’m guessing everyone in his community knows. There are the beginnings of a makeshift memorial for Cecil outside this piece of sh!t’s office, consisting mostly of stuffed toy wild animals.

I’m discovering the limits of my vocabulary. I can’t think of words bad enough to call him. I do think he might be a sociopath, but I want to use gutter words and I don’t know enough of them.

I generally don’t have problems with hunting, people do it for food, and most hunters I know are responsible people, who because they are hunting wild animals on their own territory, also are likely not to be able to get that much. I never understood game ranches, like the place Dick Cheney made famous a couple of years ago, where they basically shoot captive animals, sounds about as much as taking a small pond and stocking it with a lot of fish, not much fun in that.

As far as bow and arrow hunting goes, that takes a lot more skill than using a gun, and those who do it tend to take even less game, and are appreciative of what they get. I find trophy hunting to be pretty despicable, of any species, killing deer to get the head and leaving the carcass to rot is disrespecting the animal that gave up its life, and all that is is usually drunken idiots from the cities and suburbs showing off.

As far as this jerk goes, I like what someone else said, he is a small man trying to make himself look big, not to mention he is just practicing the old dodge of conspicuous consumption, because to get the licenses to kill big game iike that is very expensive, so it is quite flashy, I am sure he bragged to his friends about going to Africa and hunting and spending 55k on a hunting license and such. Yeah, I have heard the arguments, that the money these licenses bring in is used for conservation, but maybe a tiny willie owner like this guy could brag about donating 55k to save lions, rather than getting a license to kill them with it, but then again, considering the kind of people that likely would be friends with a jerk like this, they probably get off on him killing magnificent animals like this, too. I also wonder about this clown as a dentist, he might be like the dentist in “Little Shop of Horrors”, a sadist, from the accounts I read he shot the poor lion with arrows, the animal dragged itself off, and it took like 40 hours for the animal to weaken enough that our intrepid hero could bravely put some bullets in him and finish it. I generally have respect for the hunters I know, because one of the things they strive to do is make a clean kill and not have the animal suffer, and they hate the drunken buffoons who are a lower class version of this cretin, who don’t know how to hunt, and often leave the animal to die in agony because they are klutzes, and probably drunk.

I hope the people in the area he lives in stay away in droves, and that they shame people who try to use this clown’s services, someone who could do something like this is a weak stupid person IMO. It is funny, I was reading an account the other day how Randy Johnson (the retired pitcher) has taken up photography, and he was talking with pride about the pictures he caught of lions in the wild , true wildlife pictures, to me that is a lot more of a feat (though that does raise a question, if a lion saw Sandy Johnson, all 6’ 10 of him, who would be more scared, him or the lion? lol)

Somehow his gave looks familiar. I’ve watched a lot of grindtv, that must be where I’ve seen his face before.

@musicprnt – I’m guessing his dental career is over. His facebook, twitter, and youtube accounts have been taken down, but yelp is still going strong. The internet is not happy, not happy at all.

Unfortunately, he probably has enough money to live comfortably, judging from the fact that he could spend $50K indulging his sick pleasures. I oppose torture in all its forms, but I think I could make an exception for this gutless soulless #@!%wad.
