Got an email a few weeks ago from this organization saying my D might be eligible for “state grants” based on the information in her FAFSA. IS this legit? Anybody ever hear about AES/PHEAA? Is this connected with the state/Commonwealth of Pennsylvania or just some consulting firm scam?

To register, you have to enter information, some of it required like an account number. This is strange because my D has never received an account number. The alternative, if you’ve received an account number, is “social security number.” But that doesn’t make sense.

I’m concerned this may be some kind of scam.

PHEA/AES is a nonprofit agency of the State of Pennsylvannia. Its kinda confusing how it all works but it is a the agency we used when our S attended CMU and a Citibank student loan.

that is the PA state grant programs
[PHEAA - Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency](http://www.pheaa.org/)
It is legit.

Yeap, my own ed loan is managed by them.

Very very legit Plainsman! Be aware if you daughter chooses a school in MD, NY or NJ she will likely NOT get any state grant. If she chooses a school is another state she may get one but it will be greatly reduced - by like 90%.
You won’t know the amount of the state grant for sometime. Probably not until May or June.

American Education Services - My kids do have their Stafford Loans through them - KeystoneBest program. They are online and very easy to deal with - my experience.

I just went back and re-read your post. what you describe seems out of the ordinary. It could be a phishing email. Go to the legit websites we posted and see if this jives. The AES website is very very secure. I would be wary of giving out the social security number.

When your daughter receives her financial aid awards she will get everything she needs. PHEAA will send a document in the mail detailing what she is entitiled to based on her FAFSA. You will have a chance to make any corrections or explain any situations.

I got the same e-mail a few days after I had submitted the FAFSA. It does lead to the legit website; I tried it both ways to see. I doubt we will get anything, but did submit. It only takes a few minutes, and there is a page to print out and mail in with signatures.

PHEAA is the legit site for state grants of PA
