American History Req't

Dumb question: A lot of the classes listed to fulfill the university’s american history req’t are upper division. I’m not clear on what if any pre-reqs these have or how advisable it is for freshman to take upper division english/history/soc classes first qtr. If no pre-reqts are listed in the online catalog description, does that mean it’s safe to walk in cold?

I hear that if you pass the AP US History exam, you don’t need to take anymore history. Is that true??

You didn’t take US History and/or US Government in high school?

from http://www.registrar.ucla.edu/catalog/catalog05-07under-5.htm

Regarding your question, I can’t really answer it, but I’m sure others here can.

According to that link, that seems to be the case. Unless your major requires more history or something.

D’oh.
The good news: I assumed you had to have taken AP american history, not just the standard, CA-mandated US History class junior year. The catalog doesn’t say it had to have been AP. So I guess that’s done.
The bad news: My question was dumber than I thought.

However, I am still interested in the part about taking upper division classes in non-major depts.

so if i’ve taken us history (got a A in both semester) and gov (B) in high school, that means that i dont need to take history in college?

both are ap classes but not sure if it doesnt matter or not

I wouldn’t say you won’t EVER have to take another history class if you manage to fullfill the American History Req. You MIGHT be able to manage it but, you’ll still have to fulfill the requirements under the Foundations of Society and Culture which include at least one class in Historical analysis (which is more or less a History class of somekind.)

You can get around this requirement if you find a GE that can cover multiple sub-Foundation categories. I had SEASIAN 1 and it covers all but one of the non-science GEs… hardly anything relevant to Philosophical and Linguistics Analysis but I could potentially use it for that.

oh so there are more requirements that relate to history as well?

i just can’t wait till junior year, that way ill focus more on my major -_-
