I would have thought having onions and potatoes out on the deck would cause them to freeze and that would be a bad thing. Am I wrong? We belong to a CSA and I have to make an effort to get through the potatoes. I’m getting better, but I need to figure out how to organize my freezer so I can put roasted vegetables in it or something. I don’t throw away a lot, but I could still do better.
It is 50 degrees here currently. Drops town to 40-45 at night. Good temperatures for veggie storage. Of course, this method would not be recommended for freezing temperatures or temperatures above 60.
To make potatoes and onions last longer, store in a cool very dark place (you can cover with breathable fabric). Properly stored, root vegetables can be stored throughout the winter. As a kid, we had a root cellar in our basement and grew our own potato, onion and garlic crops.
Now that it’s just the two of us, I don’t buy anything in bulk and tend to walk to the market every day and just buy what we need. It definitely helps in cutting down waste.
We buy the rotisserie chicken from Costco a couple times a month for just the 2 of us. DH eats all the dark meat and I eat maybe one of the breasts and then I put the remains in a large freezer bag and stash in the freezer. As soon are there are three of them (that’s all that fit in my biggest pot) I make the most delicious chicken stock from them, one onion, 2 carrots, 2 celery stalks and one bay leaf. If I’m not using the stock immediately I can freeze that for future use. If one of us is coming down with a cold it’s lovely to be able to throw together a really tasty chicken noodle soup in about 30 minutes. Broth from a carton doesn’t begin to compare.
My youngest kid is smart and altruistic all in one sneaky little package. His school regularly has canned food drives and we don’t usually have much in the way of canned food so don’t have much to donate. I was a little suspicious when he went off to school clanking loudly one day. When I asked what was making that noise, he innocently said that he was bringing some canned goods to donate. Taking a look in his backpack, I found canned anchovies, smoked oysters and a few other delicacies… all the expensive stuff the adults love but kids hate. He figured he could feed the homeless and get rid of something he didn’t want to eat at the same time.
Our teens were the worst about eating leftovers. It’s one reason I was motivated to go on a cooking strike.
There’s half an avocado sitting on the top shelf of my fridge that I just know I’m not going to get to on time. Maybe I’ll offer it to the postal carrier this afternoon…
^^^ Use avocado in place of some fat in baking!
Use the avocado in lieu of mayo in a sandwich. Delish & healthier!
Or for breakfast with eggs!
I’m trying to be less wasteful with food this year while still meeting my fitness goals. It’s hard to balance. So far, so good this month. Last year, we were very wasteful. We just bought too much and often I just didn’t feel like having what was in the house.
Leftover avocado? What even is that?? Is that like this “leftover wine” I hear about?
Leftover avocado could also be used in a vinaigrette
They projected an entire country’s food waste without collecting a single crumb of it? ?
And they’re going to knead this into some kind of climate change policy? ?
AMERICAN HOUSEHOLDS WASTE NEARLY A THIRD OF THEIR FOOD, Study Finds.
This study has not found me & my two dogs.
Regarding frozen grapes = toxic to dogs, but great in white wine as a “chiller”.
I am pleased to report that we enjoyed the avocado at dinner. And I have new inspiration to buy some grapes!
@BunsenBurner Do you think waste policies such as Seattle’s make a difference in food waste? D moved there this fall and all the trash/food disposal rules were a learning curve. The thought of keeping food scraps and trekking them to a different part of the apartment complex puts me on mom “gag” and bug alert.
She’s a minimalist. Cooks a big meal Sunday and eats it until it’s gone; whether that’s Tuesday or Friday
Nothing nasty about composting if that is what you are talking about.
