While I certainly believe American Idol leaves a lot to be desired, I have found myself watching it from time to time. I have to say I’ve never been so drawn to any of the performers as I have this year for David Cook. I have been more deliberately trying to catch the show each week, just to see him sing.

I think there is other talent in this group (I like Carly, too), but I never remember being so impressed by any of the finalists or winners from other years?

Anyone else watching this year and think David is brilliant?

I admit to being a closet fan too :o
But, I am not totally enamoured of any one singer. They all have talent. But I do agree with the judges tonight. The guys did remarkably well with Mariah Carey songs! I was also sorry to see the guy go last week. I liked him too.

I think David Cook is the best I have heard in a long time. I liked it when he played the song with the lyrics of something like “All right now, baby, it’s all right now”. I just can’t remember the song title or artist. I have been disappointed with the other songs he has sung. Cook is a pop/rock kind of guy but he keeps singing soft rock. The other thing I don’t like about him is that he dresses like a hobo and has worse hair than Bill Gates. It will be interesting to see how well he does this year.

I’ve become a pretty regular fan, in spite of my best efforts not to be sucked in
I also lreally liked Michael Johns, but I absolutely agree, Teriwtt, about David Cook. Tonight, I forgot to watch Idol until half way through and I was worried I’d missed him. Luckily he was 2nd to the last–and I loved him tonight.

He is consistently unpredictable and almost every week delivers a unique and memorable performance. He’s certainly my favorite…I love that he always surprises me. I think he’s a remarkably talented guy.

Although I think it’s highly possible he won’t win (David Archuleta has WAY too many fans who will call in endlessly for him), David Cook will be a musical artist from whom we will hear much, much more. And I would definitely buy it.

I’m not in the closet at all. I proudly love AI and David Cook. I especially liked his “Billie Jean,” which my 13yo didn’t even recognize as that song.

I’m tired of David Archuleta. Sounds the same every week. And someone, anyone, put me out of my misery and get Kristy Lee off the show.

I am out of the closet … an AI lover & proud of it! I don’t care for David A (he pushes his voice too much for me … it’s too Broadway for my taste). I LOVE Jason C & think David C is pretty darn good. The girls are all fine, but I just think the guys are stronger. Bottom line, though, is that I think it’s all good … any of the contestants at this point is an excellent performer!

Youdon’tsay - that arrangement of Billie Jean was amazing. I guess that’s what impresses me about him, is his ability to create some great arrangements, making them his own.

razorsharp - are you referring to the song by Free?

teriwtt, the version of “Billie Jean” was not actually his … although I do agree that he sang it brilliantly!! The version was originally written & performed by Chris Cornell (who also did a beautiful version of Ave Maria).

That’s it! All Right Now by Free. Cook knocked it out of the park when he sang it. He was a little bit lippy to Simon afterwards but Randy and Paula loved him.

I’ve never been in the closet, I’ve watched every season of American Idol since the beginning. Although the show often irritates me, and Paula gets more incoherent and unstable with each passing season, it is very entertaining. I have liked David Cook since the start. He’s a very talented performer.

David Archuleta has a beautiful voice. The tone is so clear and pure, and he knows how to take care of his instrument. I’m not sure why people think that being “too Broadway” is a criticism. The singers on Broadway probably have the strongest voices in the world of vocalists. There aren’t many pop stars or rock stars or country stars who could ever handle singing a Broadway show eight times a week without encountering vocal problems. The fact that so many AI alumni have appeared on Broadway should prove that being “too Broadway” isn’t a negative. :)

And yes, please, Kristy (or Syesha), let’s have Ruben sing you out this week!

I’m watching it this season. The guys blew the girls out of the water tonight. The judges get weirder - the whole ‘hamburger’ thing tonight - poor Brooke just stood there with a ‘what the c%#*’ look on her face’.

Simon can be a bit mean but he is the only one that makes sense half the time between Paula rambling and Randy ‘dogging’.

I didn’t realize that it wasn’t his arrangement. I just assumed it since he’s taken liberty with other songs he’s done; but it awesome.

I also really, really liked the Somewhere Over the Rainbow rendition that Jason Castro did (first heard it on ER many years ago when Dr. Greene died).

I have been watching Idol since the first season and feel that this year has the strongest contestants overall. I think I am leaning towards David Cook right now - he seems to be getter stronger as the weeks go on.

Tonight it was a workout on the remote control for me, though. Also a huge fan of Dancing with the Stars (saw the live tour last month and enjoyed it immensely) and of The Biggest Loser, which had the finale tonight. (Yeah, a girl won for the first time!!). We are living in the Stone Age - no DVR, no TIVO, just my trusty remote changing the channels and somehow managing to keep track of each show - LOL!

When D was home for spring break, she said I was worse than her father with changing channels. He won’t even watch with me anymore on Tuesdays - choosing instead to watch the Red Sox all by himself!

My issue with “too Broadway” is that I consider AI a popular music singer search … and Broadway is not going to sell records on the radio. Mass appeal is just a different sound … something different, a la the Billie Jean cover. As much as I adore Jason Castro, I doubt he’ll make it to the #1 spot because his sound has a bit less mass appeal than might be needed. However, I am an indie music fan & I think he’ll end up with a great indie career due to his exposure (which I think will be just fine with him).

Cook’s Billie Jean performance gave me goosebumps. He really is special. … I like Archuleta alot, but certainly prefer Cook. … I, too, miss Michael Johns. Easy on the eyes and a pretty good singer, to boot. The girls are weaker this season, though Carly Smithson has a wonderful voice.

I like Syesha too - I think she’s been consistently good so far.
And agreed re: David Cook’s hair needing a makeover or at least a good washing!

Missed Idol tonight because I was watching my other guilty pleasure: The Real Housewives of NYC on Bravo. Needed something to fill the gap after Project Runway…
