American Idol New Season

Since the first time I heard him, I knew he MUST sing Why Don’t We Just Dance, sung by Josh Turner!

I don’t think they cut seven at this time, I think they cut two of each group this week and two the next and so on until they get the top 10.

srw, I heard on the radio today that the top 10 and the wild card picks will be announced on Thursday night’s show.

The winner by a mile tonight was Pia and the biggest disappointment has to be Julie. I thought Ashton, Thia, and Lauren Alaina were also good. Those high notes that Pia hit were so effortless, it looked like she was hardly even singing them. Wow!

When James got out of his chair and was standing up next to Ryan, just before Ryan was introducing Ashton, was very bizarre and awkward?!

First time voter on American Idol…what the bleep! I could vote 50 times?? What kind of voting is that?

I liked Lauren, Lauren, Pia and Thia…but not enough to vote 50 times…

That’s how the voting works on many of these shows. I think that the 50 vote limit online is the first limit of any kind for Idol. Phone voting is unlimited, unless something has changed this season. It’s pretty silly but that’s the way it is.

I don’t vote, and can’t from Canada even if I wanted to, but if I could have last night, I would have chosen Pia, Lauren, Lauren, Thia and Karen as my top five and Naima as my wildcard pick.

It’s interesting watching the judges comments and dynamics so far. Randy is about as controversial/judgmental as he’s ever been, which when compared to Simon wasn’t much but he’s appearing as the bad guy so far. I think that Steven and Jennifer are going to have to toughen up a bit and be more constructive in their comments. They don’t need to be mean in order to give constructive criticism.

One thing I noticed last night with the girls was that many of them clearly are not used to performing onstage. There was a lot of awkward movement, arm flailing, repeated switching of the microphone from one hand to the other, cheesy ‘acting the song’ that made me embarrassed for some of them. I hope that they get a little more direction in the coming weeks. Standing with your legs 2-3 feet apart, and knees bent, while singing isn’t attractive.

Could not agree more on alwaysamom’s comments about the judges and how Randy is now the “tell it like it is” judge, taking over for the departed Simon Cowell. A good example of this was the very first performer Tatynisa, who Steven and JLo gushed all over her when in fact she wasn’t that great last night (but always adorable), befoe Randy disagreed with them. This was one of several incidents during the last two night’s performances where Randy got it right when Steven and JLo didn’t, imo.

^^This. Who was the girl singing the Kelly Clarkson song…she had on a short poofy skirt and stood with her feet wide apart for just about the whole thing. It was kinda…ewwww.

And yes…the moment with James was very awkward. At first I thought it was scripted - but then changed my mind, when Ryan said “JAMES - go sit down!”

alwaysamom- We also thought that many of the girls look very awkward on stage as if they are not used to performing. Hopefully they will relax and become more adept as the season moves on. We were kind of surprised at some of the judges’s remarks. We thought Pia was good but not worth a standing ovation. We cringed at a couple of Thia’s flat notes, but then the judges loved her- we thought her performance was boring and bad; oh well. We liked Naima, Kendra and Lauren, but can’t say we loved anyone. Rachel has to go! On the boys side, we were not overly impressed with anyone until the last 3. Jacob is amazing and while I don’t personally like his style of music, he is great. Paul is quirky and I love his voice but he is a little weird to watch. I love Casey- he seems to be an all-around musical talent and he is a good entertainer- very relaxed and having fun. If Brett goes on I will quit watching the show!

The teaser for the news last night was something like “Tune in to find out what the AI producers edited out of tonight’s episode and how it might affect your vote!”…

I forgot to watch. Anyone know what that was about?

And ditto on that poufy skirt girl’s “stance”…awkward!

Yes, tonight they will announce the top 5 guys and top 5 girls and each judge will pick a wildcard from the “leftovers” - so we will have a top 13. I personally wish that each of those 14 left, would have ONE MORE chance to sing to secure a wildcard spot.

I believe poufy skirt, wide-stance girl singing Kelly Clarkson song was Julie. I’m hoping she doesn’t go home BEFORE Rachel does!

isn’t this the first year we are getting to the top 10 based on 1 song??? kind of weird if you ask me and I agree with abasket; we really should have had at least one more…

Just watched both boy and girl shows on DVR. SO much more time effective than Live!

Only Casey, Jacob and Pia really impressed me. Casey does seem to be a legit musician, with great stage presence to boot.

I’m really enjoying this wildcard sing off!!!

I really like the boys so much better than the girls this year. I thought all the boys in the wildcard sang so much better tonight than Tuesday, and the girls were just ok, although probably better song choices tonight for them.

I was surprised that Hayley got more votes than Ashton and Naima for the top 10 spot.

Thought Stefano had the strongest wild card performance overall, along with Ashton.

I thought Naima’a song choice and vocals during the wild card round was really poor and it almost cost her the spot. I’m glad they took her, though!

Was really surprised Clint didn’t get a chance to sing in the wild card round. I still think he was one of the most talented male singers in the competition. He just wasn’t that likeable and may have been too low a vote-getter to get another chance.

Thought JLo’s song and video was really weak. My HS senior son also thought it was lame.

I’m really looking forward to seeing the finalists playing their own instruments, so we can see the “complete package” they are as an artist.

Visiting my dad and he insisted on watching a rerun of CSI during the second hour of AI. Only one TV in his house…UGH!

Stephano just makes me smile. I love his voice, attitude and he’s darn cute to look at!

At the auditions, I fell in like with Robbie - was sure he would be a top 5 contestant. So sad he didn’t make it through. His last couple of songs needed to be a little more current and he needed to show a LITTLE more personality - he seemed very shy, reserved. But another smile maker!

There are a few I like, a few I definitely don’t in the top 13. Not a fan of Ashton’s demeanor. Haley and her voice = “no” for me. Not on the Scotty or Casey train at the moment, though they seem like nice enough guys. Like James, but worry how he is going to manage the limelight/social aspects and pressures of the whole thing.

Nice moment with Stephano/James when they put them on the stage at the same time (they have been roommates since Hollywood week) and the joyous hug when Stephano made top 13. Sweet!

I was also surprised that Clint did not get a chance to sing in the wild card sing-off. He seemed visibly crushed by not making it. Unfortunately, the Hollywood week footage of him kicking the young boy out of his group (whether real or set up for dramatic effect) caused a lot of viewers to not like him. I also though he picked a very “karaoke” song Tuesday, though he sang it well. I liked all three of the boys in the sing-off better than the girls, but Stefano really does deserve to be in the top 13, IMO.
