How closely related are the two CLEPs? I just took A&I Lit today and got a 76 on it. I’ve already studied for American Lit quite a bit but I just want to know how similar the two tests are.
Have you read the description of the two exams? Sure there is some similarity in that you need to know how to read the passages and interpret their meaning. Under the Knowledge & Skills Required section of the study for American Lit, the bulleted remarks seem to indicate a knowledge of more specifics – particular works of American authors, knowledge of the historical and social settings, relation to other works and other literary traditions, influences on their authors. The chronological periods are listed (from colonial times to present) which are different than the time period covered in the A&I exam.
For those into literature, some have a preference of English/British authors. In this case, you should find at least one anthology on American authors and literature specifically and see how much of it you are already familiar with.
Thank you for your response! Yes, I have read the descriptions but I wanted to know if anyone from CC had perhaps taken the test or had any first-hand experience,
I have not taken American Lit , but did attempt Analyzing & Inter. Lit… From what I’ve read, Amer Lit is harder and requires knowledge of authors and their works (don’t know how in-depth though).
The Analyzing Lit is very simple. If you can read, grasp the main idea and understand paragraph structures, it should be simple. I was done fairly quick and I took my time. It’s 3 credits and will most likely take you out of a English Elective or basic composition class (or remedial). Regardless, it’s worth taking.
