The American Opportunity Credit (AOC) does not cover “expenses related to any course of instruction or education involving sports, games or hobbies.” My question is about what is considered a hobby. For example, photography to some people is a hobby, but to others is a career. If I sign up for a photography course that requires a camera, then how would that course be interpreted?

You need to be taking the class for college credit. It doesn’t count if it is a non-credit class you take just because you feel like it.

I am taking the class for credit. I am just concerned whether it would be classified as a hobby.

If it carries academic credit that can be used toward your degree, it’s fine.
