American Philosophical Society Elects New Members (news item)

<p>Princeton sociologist Alejandro Portes is one of 35 newly elected members of the American Philosophical Society.</p>

<p>Portes, the Howard Harrison and Gabrielle Snyder Beck Professor of Sociology, has been a member of the Princeton faculty since 1997. His research focuses on national development, economics, sociology, immigration and urbanization.</p>

<p>The Philadelphia-based American Philosophical Society, founded by Benjamin Franklin in 1743, is the country’s oldest learned society. The society engages leading scholars, scientists and professionals in opportunities for multidisciplinary, intellectual fellowship, and it supports research, discovery and education through grants, lectures, publications, prizes and exhibitions.</p>

<p>“Early members included George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Paine, James Madison, and John Marshall. </p>

<p>“Today the Society has 975 elected members, 809 resident members and 166 international members from more than two dozen foreign countries. Since 1900, more than 260 members have received the Nobel Prize. </p>

<p>Berkeley led all U.S. institutions this year with three faculty members elected to the prestigious society. The Ivies were represented by two faculty members each at Cornell and Harvard and one each at Columbia and Princeton. (A researcher at the Harvard-affiliated Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics was also elected.)</p>
