American thinking about attending McGill...Questions!!!

Should I have a shot with these stats?
3.2UW GPA overall, 3.7UW Junior Year
2160 SATs
Mostly APs and Honors(except English…)But I a 5 on the English AP test…
Only 2 year foreign language since I nearly failed it my freshmen year
Some really good ECs, Mock Trial,Band,Debate Team,1st place state science fair

You can still get Federal Finical Aid right?..I believe Canada is the only country that allows this…

Do U.S companies such as Microsoft,HP,Lockheed Martin,Northrup, or government agencies such as NASA or such recruit at McGill?

4.Would this cause a problem if I needed to apply for U.S DoD/DoE security clearance?

Those companies accept from all sorts of universities and they will value your qualities more than the name of the university you graduated from. That said, I do know of Mcgill grads who have worked for NASA. Does that help? :P

you can definetly get a job with the CSA(Canadian Space Agency) not sure about NASA though

ALSO, most of those companies have canadian divisions. I know that HP has an office in Toronto cause my dad had to go there for a course once

In terms of financial aid, you can get subsidized stafford loans, but you will not be eligible for any government grants (pell, SMART, what-have-you).

I’m not sure about the how many of your listed companies recruit, but I can say that the engineering faculty holds tech/career fairs twice a year.

I’m not sure why federal divisions like NASA, or the DoD would recruit anywhere in Canada, though (be real…). I don’t think your shots at NASA or any other agency will be hindered by going to McGill, they just won’t be the same as a Cal Tech or MIT grad’s chances.

Somehow I overlooked the fact that you mentioned “recruit”, I agree I wouldn’t think NASA would recruit as much as the CSA, but you can certainly get involved in NASA research.

I only meant to say that there are quite a few people in McGill’s Geology/Planetary Sciences Dept. who have worked for NASA. Ex: Years ago, a few McGillers made a name for themselves working with the NASA Astrobiology institute and in the Canadian High Arctic. There are of course also members of faculty who collaborate with NASA (Example: the McGill High Arctic Research Station is funded by both the CSA and NASA). Even though that really doesn’t answer your question, maybe it’s worth looking into. drmambo is in McGill eng., he knows what he’s talking about. All I can say is my parents graduated from McGill and moved on to work in very good places but I don’t think this has anything to do with the McGill name. If you’re good enough, chances are they’ll want you.
