<p>Hearkening back to Cold War anxieties, growing signs of spying on U.S. universities are alarming national security officials. As schools become more global in their locations and student populations, their culture of openness and international collaboration makes them increasingly vulnerable to theft of research conducted for the government and industry.</p>

<p>“We have intelligence and cases indicating that U.S. universities are indeed a target of foreign intelligence services,” Frank Figliuzzi, Federal Bureau of Investigation assistant director for counterintelligence, said in a February interview in the bureau’s Washington headquarters.</p>

<p>I guess that this shouldn’t be a surprise given all the research done in US Universities. I’d guess that this happens in companies too.</p>

<p>BC, I expect it would be harder for a “spy” to infiltrate an American company, since the selection process can be quite difficult. Many American universities, however, are happy to take international students, especially if they are paying full-freight.</p>

<p>A lot of US companies hire foreign nationals with advanced degrees to work both in the US and in China.</p>

<p>Very scary. I also hear that some university employees openly publish original research that a spy might be able to obtain.</p>

<p>Well, that’s the purpose of research.</p>

<p>What a spy might also get is techniques and methods which isn’t always completely clear in research, unpublished and incomplete work.</p>
