Thanks for sharing that. AU feels like such a great fit for my son in every way (was my number one from our first campus visit) except the cost is a lot more after aid than I expected. A few other good offers are on the table, we’re waiting on the last school decision, and then there’s so much to weigh in the next month plus. Good luck to everyone in the same boat.
My son was offered estimated AU grant aid with his acceptance. The aid is contingent upon the fafsa being received and completed. Our fafsa was processed and we are now waiting to add a signature. I’m really concerned time is running out and that further form/ website issues will get in the way.
So many people are in the same stress boat, and schools know it. Their financial aid offices still have a lot to do after the FAFSA info makes it to them and will work as quickly as they can, but they aren’t going to pull offers. Our FAFSA portal says “processed” but AU’s portal doesn’t show a check mark next to FAFSA, so I have no clue when to expect any final word on grant aid. Hang in there!
sent you a DM if you don’t mind
this is really not nice and so disrespectful to the kids that did not get in.
Well you can’t deny demonstated interest was a major factor in the results. I’m not sure how noticing that is disrespectful.
Looks like you get in if you show interest no matter gpa
that is disrespectful and untrue Stating that they rely even heavily on demonstrated instrest is not as it does not diminish those that were accepted
I genuinely believe that demonstrated interest and yield protection were both factors in my kid being placed on the waitlist. In retrospect, we didn’t realize just how important demonstrated interest was, and if we had it to do over again, we might have played the game differently. I can objectively see why AU admissions made the choice they made. And that’s okay. My kid has also been accepted into several other schools, several with merit, in honors programs, etc. I’m still very disappointed by the waitlist from AU (both parents are AU alum), but kid is fine and is moving on. Love the school that loves you back. Congrats to everyone who was accepted!
Yep, American is one of the few schools that puts Demonstated Interest in the “very important” section of the CDS but they don’t really advertise that fact elsewhere. It is considered just as important as GPA! Congrats to your kids! I’m sure they will be going somewhere great.
How long does it take to get the final results of the FAFSA application?
There’s no straight answer to this given how messed up FAFSA was this year. You best option would be to ask the financial aid office directly.
Hi! I am admitted student to AU and I was wondering if there is some kind of discord to connect with other AU students or to learn more about AU updates.
most admitted students make instagram accounts (you can probably search “auclassof2028” to find them). for official updates, they’d all be going to your AU student email which you would’ve gotten instructions to log in to.
Anyone here with Lincoln Scholars program We have few questions.
Your student can email their admissions counselor or auambassadors@american.edu to get connected with a current student in the program.
I went to the Honors College reception and New Eagle Day this week, and I must say I was quite impressed. I was an AU skeptic prior to the events but am now receptive. The welcome by the outgoing President was excellent, and the Kogod faculty panel was exciting. From my perspective it seems like the school is innovative and on the right path. That said, I don’t understand why AU has relatively poor ‘traditional metrics’, such as US News ranking and admissions statistics (# of applicants, admit rates, etc). The school’s prime location alone I would think would be a huge draw for applicants. Would love to hear any thoughts from someone more informed and knowlegeable than me.
Rankings were discussed in a different thread.
TLDR: US news changed their formula which overwhelmingly hurt private colleges because they no longer consider factors like faculty, class sizes, etc that AU historically has done well in. As well, rankings really don’t matter as much as they used to. The only people who care about rankings are prospective students and their families (and maybe the occasional grad school), but not employers.
The admissions statistics are on par for a school like AU (41% AR, 20k applicants). It’s absolutely in line with its sister schools.
Thanks for the response. I appreciate the clarification on the ranking, I wasn’t aware it had dropped so much year-to-year, nor had I seen the AU response. With regard to the 41% AR, I was under the impression it was much higher this year, which would be a function of a relatively small applicant pool. Again, given what I saw from the AU staff and the location in general, I am surprised the applicant pool isn’t considerably larger.
The final acceptance rate this year won’t be published for a while. They received only a slightly smaller amount of applications as last year (19k this year compared to 20k last year), so there’s no reason that the AR would be terribly higher. They are also planning to grow the freshman class size so the final AR for this year will probably be anywhere from 45-50%. And a 19-20k applicant pool for a school like AU is considered on the higher end, so there’s really nothing out of the ordinary regarding anything about AU’s admissions/ranking.
thanks !!
