Is this publication by Design Intelligence worthe the price?

My personal opinion is “no”. I bought it thinking it would have information on the various programs, but it did not. Most of it was various rankings. While it is helpful to have an idea of well regarded Arch programs (both undergrad and grad), the purchase price was overpriced for what was contained therein. Those lists could be shared quite simply and have the same effect. It is more like a “booklet” than a book. I recall it costing about 40 bucks. That is a lot to get a list of schools. There wasn’t any information about them and I had assumed it would be like a college directory specific to arch schools, but it wasn’t.

Is there some other book that gives a decent overview of architectural & design programs? I’ve heard of something called the Alamanac of Design & Architecture - is that one worth anything?

I have never seen that book but maybe someone else could respond who knows.

I would probably try to find a copy of Design Intelligence that you don’t have to pay for… maybe see if the library at one of your local architecture schools has a copy? Design Intelligence definitely has its flaws (subjectivity, questionable basis for rankings, questionable balance of practitioners surveyed for the rankings, only ranking accredited programs… there’s a lot), BUT it’s a great starting point. There are so many schools out there that it’s very hard to even know which ones to look at, so if you can find a copy to browse it would be helpful.

I certainly agree with larationalist that it is a useful starting point to have a list of well regarded arch programs such as the ones in DI’s booklet. It is just that I could type the list up in five minutes and pass it around and it seemed like a lot to pay $40 for the list. I thought I was buying more of a directory with way more in it. However, the lists are useful starting points.

Agree. The DI is a very small “pamphlet” that gives very little information. We ordered it through a library share program for $5. It wasn’t even worth the $5 fee!

No, no, no.

Pick a school based on where you want to live when you get out.

Check http://www.naab.org/cal_cat1724/cal_cat.htm for a list of accredited schools.

cornell is still #1
:D

especially when deciding on architecture schools, DI isn’t a good way to choose which school to go to. go to a place where you WANT to go.

Hi,

The link you gave does not work. Does anybody know of a site that gives a lits of schools who provide Masters in Industrial Design?

Resurrecting an old post, eh?
