@garland:
after the last home stand, maybe it would be better if they just played all their games on the road:)
I’m going to bask in unalloyed joy, and save the snark for another day.
I know this thread is mostly about New York teams but I just have to say the Royals clinched the division on Thursday and I was there! Let’s Go Royals!
^This thread is about all teams --we just seem to chatter more.
Congratulations to you!
Toronto clinched a playoff spot this weekend and it’s the first time since 1993. It’s a happy time! The focus now with a four game lead over the Yankees is to finish first in the AL East and there’s still a possibility that they could finish with the best record in the AL which would give them home advantage.
^ Wish I could ‘Like’ this twice. Congratulations!
I think Harvey did what he wanted to do and told Boras to stay out of it. He left the game with a lead against the Yankees and the bullpen blew it. I think he wanted to be the winner in the clinching game.
I’m not sure how I feel about home field. The last homestand was bad, but we’re usually a good home team. I don’t want us to overwork players just to get home field, but we have to continue to play competitively if we’re going to be sharp going into the playoffs.
Thanks to all who wished the Cubs well. Hope they win some goes between now that p-o game. Who knows, it could be against the Cards, as the Pirates seem to want to take the division. For me, it’s still boggles the mind that we could win 90 games before it’s over. Joe Maddon and the kids are fine for us.
Our MVP, Josh Donaldson, hits a walk-off homerun in the 9th to beat Tampa 5-4, and sweep the weekend series. Last regular season home game. What a game!
Donaldson should be the league MVP fairly easy.
In the NL it will go to Harper but he was not the MVP he was the Best Player over the year. I would like to see a side by side comparison of the Mets and Nats records since Cespedas came to the Mets and both their stats over that time frame.
Do the Cards, Pirates or Cubs have any candidates? I think the Pirates left fielder is great. I think it is Marte.
I think it is great that teams that haven’t been the usual teams are in the playoffs are doing it, the Royals were I believe wildcard last year and this year got the division, the Pirates have kept going, the Mets made it, Toronto has finally taken the division, it is all good.
Did anyone see the tape of Jonathan Papelbon attacking Bryce Harper in the dugout during today’s game? Yikes!
^Definitely wow. haven’t been a Harper fan (naturally), but Papelbon is a clubhouse nightmare. Don’t be strangling the League MVP! Harper did his part for the team. it looks to me that bringing in Papelbon was part of the Nats’ downfall.
We were watching the game and saw it. Agree. Papelbon is only going to be vilified. Harper is the franchise, and if Pap hasn’t learned that yet, he’s going to have a tough time next year. Pap’s reputation preceded him, and it ain’t good. Both hands around his throat? Yikes! The consensus among the talking heads here was that Harp would come out on top with management.
Certainly some exciting games today, but what was Papelbon thinking?
Cubs won the 90th game. I’m in heaven. I think they have a shot at the NL Cy Young pitcher in Arrieta, the NL Rookie in Kris Bryant, Manager of the year in Joe Maddon, and maybe an outside shout for MVP in Anthony Rizzo.
^As a Mets fan, I’d like to see Thor (Noah Syndergaard) win RofthY, and Collins win Manager of the Year. I think they’re both in the talk but long shots. (and as long as we’re talking longshots, Cespedes for MVP
). For what it’s worth, Alderson should run away with Executive of the Year.
I think your Arrieta should absolutely be Cy Young. I think Harper has MVP sewn up.
^We all have our loyalties, but this year I think a number of players are in the talk for lots of the awards, and that’s a good thing.
Papelbon is probably done in DC. That team is dysfunctional, and Pap doesn’t help.
I agree that Terry Collins should be NL Manager of the Year, but I’m biased. Harper should be MVP, and Arrieta Cy Young.
The third baseman from the Rockies had a year just as good as Harper. His stats were as good on the road also. Either one of them could be named player of the year. Neither one should be MVP.
The MVP should come from either the Mets, Dodgers, Cards, Pirates or Cubs. I could consider a player on a non-playoff team if the team was close or overachieved but the Nats clearly underachieved.
Hard decision on MOY for me, I could make an argument for Collins, but I would probably lean towards Madden, the Cubs came out of nowhere, whereas with the Mets because of their pitching staff people expected them to be in the playoffs, albeit a wild card, not the division, I think the Cubs winning had a lot more to do with Maddon then the Mets with Collins. Syntergaard could be a ROY candidate, but I suspect Bryant might end up taking that. As far as Alderson as executive of the year, that to me is questionable, getting Cespedes turned out to be a gift from the gods, and Uribe and Johnson helped, but that would also leave out the shape the team was in coming into this year, where we had things like hitters batting .168 in the cleanup position (yes, Wright was hurt, D’arnaud was hurt, but it showed how little depth they had).
