America's pastime: Hope springs eternal . . . (aka the baseball thread)

Happy to see my Yankees limp into the post season tonite even if only via the wild card…first time since 2012.
Nice to see the old man Sabbathia get the win leading g the team of youngsters with names I’m only now learning.
Can’t say I’m confident they’ll get far, but hey, it’s baseball, anything can happen.

Well, now we know who’s playing and where. I know it’s only one game guaranteed, but pulling for my Cubs in Pittsburgh.

Talk about limping–Mets’ last week been very weak. Glad they at least won the last game. Kudos to Max Scherzer for his brilliant pitching for the Nats Saturday night.

We do get a whole series, but will be a little surprised, happily, if they get past that. Which would put them into the buzzsaw that is the NL Central. But it’s baseball, and anything can happen!

@garland, same thing happened with our Jays. After clinching the AL East, they didn’t even limp to the last game, they crawled. Back home now, resting up and getting back on track to meet the Rangers on Thursday.

Other than the series against the Reds, the Mets haven’t looked good offensively since the end of Aug. Fortunately the starters looked good this weekend, so maybe we can score just enough against the Dodgers.

Heartbreaking season for Detroit Tigers and their fans :frowning: Time to start hoping for next year I guess.

Just heard on local sports station that Sabathia has gone into alcohol rehab and will not be around for the playoffs.

As S2 put it, Rizzo presided over a “Red Wedding” at Nationals Park this am. Entire coaching staff fired.

Just read it. I know D. Martinez is under consideration. He has helped Joe Maddon a lot w/the Cubs.

Sad about Sabathia.

Not unexpected about the Nats. No point delaying the inevitable.

Very sad about Sabathia. He’s been pitching well as of late and headed for post-season rotation, so I am speculating that there must have been a sudden, serious incident that precipitated this. Wishing him well, and kudos for taking care of what’s important.

Toronto fans not happy with the start times for the first two games on Thursday and Friday. Both afternoon starts, geez.

As for Sabathia, he was involved in an incident in Toronto when the Yankees were in town a couple of months ago. Rumors then said that it wasn’t an unusual occurrence with him in various cities. I haven’t heard of anything recent that would precipitate this decision but my guess is that something did, indeed, happen.

They might be trying to avoid their players freezing to death by having day games in Toronto. The last few games in Chicago were COLD.

@movemetoo, well, considering the temps are supposed to be in the 60s on Thursday and Friday, I don’t think that’s the issue. Even if it were going to be cold, the Jays play in a domed stadium.

It can be cold/chilly at Wrigley even in August. The lake cools quite a bit.

I worry about the Mets, their hitting has been anemic, to say the least, they are hitting like they were before Cespedes showed up. Problem with facing the dodgers is that you can’t count on winning a 1-0 game against them, they have enough hitting that it is likely they will score more than 1 run, even against the Mets. I don’t know if the players simply were playing out the season since they had clinched it, or if they have reverted to their true selves and when they were on fire they were playing above their heads. What really scared me is leaving out Scherzer, many of the pitchers who beat them were journeymen bums with eras in the 6 range, they lost to one guy who had lost 11 games to the mets before that game and suddenly he looked like Nolan Ryan. It could be a short series if they don’t hit.

On the other hand, Wednesday I’ll be rooting for the Cubs, I have to do that, I love Joe Maddon and what he has done with the cubs, and if the Mets get eliminated and the cubs are in it, I’ll be rooting for them, if the Cubs could take the series at that point it would be something worth remembering (and Ken Burns would be forced to do an “11th inning” at that point, the Cubs finally winning would demand it:)

Happy for the Astros.

Many of the Jays are at the Toronto NHL opener tonight. When they were shown on the jumbotron, the fans all stood up and chanted “Let’s go, Blue Jays!” Several employers in the city, and across the country, are giving their employees Thursday and Friday afternoons off to watch the games. Lots of excitement here!

Arrieta just got hit by a pitch and the benches have cleared in Pittsburgh. Cubs are up 4-0.

Whew!! Go, Cubs, Go!!!
Jake Arrieta is a beast!!

On to St. Louis!!!
