America's pastime: Hope springs eternal . . . (aka the baseball thread)

Well, that was fun, and relatively stress-free. Especially against possibly the best pitcher in the universe. But the DeGrominator was up to the task, and David Wright is looking like his old self. Let’s do it again, Mets! #LGM.

I couldn’t stay up to watch the whole game, so I was very pleasantly surprised to see that the Mets had won. Fortunately deGrom kept his composure after Cuddyer’s 2 misplays. I’m not convinced Collins is doing the right thing by having Clippard pitch the 8th, but he seems committed to him.

Go, Rangers! Let’s sweep!

@Shellfell–I think it might be time to start either Lagares or Conforto, no matter who’s pitching for LA. Our pitchers deserve the best defense.

I’m a longtime baseball fan. Grew up in Chicago & mom would always take us to Cubs games. Moved to Texas 30 years ago & became a Rangers fan. What a world series that would make for me ;))

Go Rangers! #nevereverquit
Go Cubs!

The first two games were pretty disappointing for Toronto fans, especially when the team is, according to most pundits, the most talented team in the post-season. Weird things can happen as we’ve seen in previous years, and in the Wild Card games this year. No one played like the Jays did in August and September. Methinks they peaked too soon. It sure has been a fun season, though.

Not sure who I’ll cheer for if it’s over tomorrow. Maybe the Mets. I could never cheer for the Cubs, given their ownership.

I’ve been rooting for a Jays/Mets WS. If your team doesn’t make it, we’d love to have you on board (premature, of course, as they have a long way to go themselves to get there).

(What’s the story on the Cubs ownership?)

Very glad the Cubbies tied it up. I’m also curious about the story with the Cubs ownership? We are from the Chicago area and D3 works for a company with close ties to the Ricketts. We haven’t heard anything negative.

Dirty play by Chase Utley. He made no attempt to touch the bag, the slide was late, and his legs were in the air. Let’s hope the Mets can regroup at home and that Flores plays well at shortstop.

I still can’t get over it. But that’s Utley. Always been dirty.

winforruben is trending. That's what the need to do.

Since my Angels team is out, I am going to root for the Cubs. Joe Maddon was a longtime assistant coach for the Angels so I want to see him win.

The only thing I like about the Dodgers is that Howie Kendrick, former Angels fan favorite, plays for them now. That was an ugly play by Utley…isn’t that stuff against the rules? Guess not…umpires let it go. We had something similar happen in an Angels-Astros game. R. Odor slid wide into J. Giovatella at second base, spiking him hard in the calf. No broken bones though.

DH and I were living in NYC in 1986 and H got major boyfriend points by giving up a single ticket to Game 6 (offered by a co-worker) so we could watch the game together at home. It was amazing.

Odor is on the Rangers, and if I remember that play correctly, it was a bad throw to Giovatella that left him so exposed.

My bad…Rangers. But no way was that spiking slide an accident or the fault of how the ball was thrown to Giavotella. Odor was coming in hard to break up the double play and landed his spikes right into Giavotella’s calf…he slid with his leg aimed at G.'s leg not at the bag. And he apologized for it so…a little guilty conscience there.

Oh, I’m not saying it wasn’t intentional; that’s the job of the runner going to second in that situation, to break up the double play. But even the announcers in your link say that part of the problem was the bad throw, that Odor couldn’t anticipate where the throw would be.

G was in an awkward position because of the throw, yes, but the slide by Odor was late and kind of a dirty play.

I wonder if because of Tejada’s broken leg there are going to be new rules about this kind of slide.

Sorry, folks, not going to go into detail on a public forum about the Ricketts. Let’s just say that in the business world, they are at the very opposite end of the spectrum from admired and respected.

I’m actually happy for the Cubs’ fans and I hope that they are enjoying the post-season.

One thing I have always enjoyed about it is seeing teams and getting to know the players who we don’t see often during the regular season.

Utley has been suspended for games 3 and 4, though he will be allowed to appeal.

Go ahead and appeal, Utley–we’d love to see you in NY. He could hang out with the 7 Line Army.

And seriously, it makes me so angry that they got rewarded for what has been labeled, rightly, as dirty and illegal.

This is where modern baseball is so fouled up, they make this big noise about protecting the players (as in the rules about catchers blocking the plate, and in theory same at second base), yet the idiot umpires allowed Utley to do what he did, and then ruled him safe at second base for what apparently was an illegal slide (Utley was in the air, and as others have pointed out, had he done that in the NFL, it would have been a personal foul). If that slide was illegal, then he should have been called out for interference. The bad part about that is that ended up more than likely giving the Dodgers the game, had he been out they may not have scored all the runs they did (not saying they wouldn’t, though, given how crappy the mets relief staff has been).

I was kind of surprised that Torre didn’t excuse himself, given that he has ties to both the dodgers (having managed there) and to Mattingly. I was just thinking if Torre didn’t act he would be a hypocrite, if this has happened to Derrick Jeter when he was on the Yankees, Torre would have ripped the umpires and the league and would more than likely immediately order retribution for what happened, especially if Jeter got hurt. BJ Upton had a great observation, he said if that had been Tulewitzky or someone of that caliber who got hurt, Utley probably would have been thrown out of the game and been out, and MLB would immediately say that the rules didn’t allow sliding into players at second base like that, but because Tejada at best is an okay shortstop, the umps shrugged it off as being ‘playoff baseball’.

What makes this really bad is I won’t be surprised if the umpires warn both benches before game 3, especially if Utley’s appeal allows him to play. I don’t like the baseball rules, this warning crap is exactly that, crap, because it allows players to play dirty without any fear of retribution, especially after a pitcher hits a a player deliberately and then they have the weenie warning crap. Either you heave the pitcher out if you think he did it deliberately, or you allow it to play out, the get out of jail free card for the perp is idiotic. I actually think the suspension sucks, I would much rather see Utley get a 100mph fastball at his head, or thrown behind his head, suspending a .200 batter doesn’t exactly do much to the Dodgers. If Utley pulled that kind of crap back when the Dodgers and Giants were still in NY, a manager like Durocher would not only have them throwing Utley, they likely also would find a way to have a ball ‘slip’ and end up in the opposing dugout…not saying that was all that great, but at least they knew there would be consequences. After something like that happened, the manager would likely if speaking to the press basically declare war, I hear the Giants/Dodgers games back in the day were basically civil war:)

My, aren’t we bloodthirsty tonight! (PS: Torre was well-known for never ordering or encouraging retaliation. Yankee fans would complain about it every time Pedro Martinez would throw at Derek Jeter or some other star player.)
